Review
"I am most favorably impressed by the Essential Histories series on the American Civil War. Written by four of the best historians of the military course of the war, these volumes provide a lucid and concise narrative of the campaigns in both the Eastern and Western theaters as well as penetrating analyses of strategies and leadership. Ideal for classroom use or fireside reading."

I read this book in preparation for a history class on the war. And actually, the class followed the book pretty closely. This war is sometimes referred to as the "forgotten war" and now I can understand why we would want to forget that it ever happened. It was not our finest hour! Other than that, it is part of our history and worth reading to understand the politics, military, economy and thinking in 1812 America.

The War of 1812...
By HMS Warspite
The War of 1812, currently being quietly commemorated in its bicentennial, is viewed differently on either side of the U.S.-Canadian border. Canadians see the conflict as preserving Britain's North American possessions for eventual independent nationhood, while conventional U.S. histories have tended to tout the conflict as a successful second war for independence. This Osprey Essential Histories book explains why that distant conflict is perhaps not well understood.
Author Carl Benn, a Canadian, works hard to present both sides of the story in "The War of 1812". Although this is a very concise introduction to the conflict at less than 100 pages, there is a good faith effort to provide context to the conflict, in the midst of the Napoleonic Wars, and to examine the war aims of the U.S. and Great Britain, and of the Indian tribes drawn into the fighting. Recent U.S. scholarship underlines the important point that two consecutive U.S. administrations failed to prepare seriously for a conflict with Great Britain that their policies made likely. The result was a series of embarrassing defeats as the U.S. repeatedly attempted to invade Canada. Only late in the war were U.S. Army units sufficiently well trained to stand up to their British and Canadian opponents. The U.S. Navy had some legendary success in individual ship on ship duels at sea, but these victories were not very meaningful in the context of a British blockade and raids against coastal cities, including the burning of Washington, D.C. and the seizure of eastern Maine. U.S. victories in 1814 were just enough to justify the treaty ending the war. Benn's narrative is very readable; the text is nicely enhanced with a good selections of maps, diagrams, and period illustrations. Recommended as a good introduction to the conflict.
