Great Book
By C. Taylor
I had the opportunity to hear Dr. Barz speak to one of my classes this semester, and we read a chapter of this book before it was released. He is an amazing person who is so immersed in his work. He is passionate and incredibly intelligent. His book is compelling and really is a great way to see how Uganda has turned the tide on AIDS. It is great to see the way that Western traditions were abandoned and with great success!

An inspiring story
By Jo the traveler
I bought this book for an (adult) niece who is traveling to Uganda on a health mission. She loved it. So many of the stories we hear out of Africa today are of human misery and suffering, and of course we must read those to become more knowledgable about the terrible needs and poverty there. But it is also necessary to fight feelings of hopelessness, and this book does that. There are things that can be done, there are people who struggle to rise above their circumstances and live to make an inspiring difference. If you are discouraged about Africa, this book will change your mind.

Review
"Joyce Morgenroth takes the subject of movement to new heights as she develops her deep way of naming it for what it does -- not what it 'looks like' or 'makes us feel'. Her book elevates our field to an actual body of knowledge in print... at long last."

My students love this book!

I use this book as a text for my undergraduate Dance Composition II course. Students love reading the direct words of the choreographers and exploring the choreographers' processes and philosophies to develop their own work.

Smart and lively
By Holly C. Lau
I like this book alot. In the introduction, we hear the voice of Joyce Morgenroth, author and interviewer. An auspices start. The writing is smart and lively. Morgenroth loves dance, has a keen eye for details, and lots of questions.Through the intro, her energetic and easy writing makes her feel close... and she is willing to take us along into the kitchens and lofts to speak with dancemakers about the alchemy of choreography.

First stop, though is a short history of modern dance. We get facts but Morgenroth concentrates on the catalysts that led to explorations. She places each of the artists in the book in context.

The interviews start with a short bio but the heft is the voice of the artist. The pieces are spontaneous and intimate and also well-structured. The artists' stories of their histories are funny and human. No matter how well known, it is clear that each artist is still deeply involved with the process of making work.

I teach dance compostion and after reading Speaking of Dance realized what a priceless resource this is for young people making art. We can't give them a formula, just tips and the courage to get out there and try.

This book supports that idea completely.

Eminently Readable & Delightful Journey in Modern Choreography
By YSB
Joyce Morgenroth's work, aptly titled Speaking of Dance, allows us the pleasure of actually hearing the voices of the choreographers and, in a very real sense, seeing their work. This simple integrity of purpose may be a large part of what makes the book so eminently readable. The author signals us with her first introductory words, "Watching dance..." that we are in for a journey from audience point-of-view. Then, Morgenroth neatly take us to the source, her interviews with twelve well-known choreographers. What different sources they turn out to be!

Speaking of Dance lets the choreographers tell their stories with the full flair of their personalities. I get who they are without being spoon-fed. They speak in their twelve highly individuals styles, just what you hope for from contemporary titans in the dance world. (No doubt much clearer sounding than some of them actually articulated before Morgenroth edited for us.) In speaking they let us into their world. How much each captivates is illuminated almost as much by how they present themselves, perhaps who they are, as by what they have created on the floor...and, in some cases, off the ceilings, on the walls, with the music coupled with each artist's internal vision. In every case I learn

Teaching Community: A Pedagogy of Hope, by bell hooks

Ten years ago, bell hooks astonished readers with Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom. Now comes Teaching Community: A Pedagogy of Hope - a powerful, visionary work that will enrich our teaching and our lives. Combining critical thinking about education with autobiographical narratives, hooks invites readers to extend the discourse of race, gender, class and nationality beyond the classroom into everyday situations of learning. bell hooks writes candidly about her own experiences. Teaching, she explains, can happen anywhere, any time - not just in college classrooms but in churches, in bookstores, in homes where people get together to share ideas that affect their daily lives.

In Teaching Community bell hooks seeks to theorize from the place of the positive, looking at what works. Writing about struggles to end racism and white supremacy, she makes the useful point that "No one is born a racist. Everyone makes a choice." Teaching Community tells us how we can choose to end racism and create a beloved community. hooks looks at many issues-among them, spirituality in the classroom, white people looking to end racism, and erotic relationships between professors and students. Spirit, struggle, service, love, the ideals of shared knowledge and shared learning - these values motivate progressive social change.

Teachers of vision know that democratic education can never be confined to a classroom. Teaching - so often undervalued in our society -- can be a joyous and inclusive activity. bell hooks shows the way. "When teachers teach with love, combining care, commitment, knowledge, responsibility, respect, and trust, we are often able to enter the classroom and go straight to the heart of the matter, which is knowing what to do on any given day to create the best climate for learning."

From Publishers Weekly
Readers of hooks's prolific body of work on feminism, racism, cultural politics, art and education will find much that is familiar here. Grounded in autobiography and storytelling and written for an intelligent lay audience, these essays exhort readers to keep up the struggle in difficult times. A distinguishing characteristic of hooks's work is the challenge to recognize, confront and overcome "white supremacist capitalist patriarchy," a recurring phrase that captures her hallmark theme: oppression occurs at the intersections of race, gender and the dominant economic system. This work updates her thinking with post-September 11 reflections on domination and hope, and contains refreshingly original thinking about spirituality, family values and even erotic relationships between professors and students. hooks, a self-defined "[l]eftist dissident feminist black intellectual," embodies the clash of 20th-century cultural politics. She writes candidly about her own racially segregated youth, her struggles to overcome discrimination in the academic workplace and her efforts to find common ground with white feminists. hooks's voice is unique in that she manages to balance a relentless critique of oppressive forces in society with the open invitation to participate in "beloved communities where there is no domination." Containing more inspiration than concrete strategies, the book may leave practicing teachers wanting more in the way of specifics about how to practice antiracist pedagogy, transform classrooms and bring about a just society. But the author's clear and consistent voice for progressive, democratic education adds an important dimension to society's thinking about shared values and the creation of a loving and fair community.

From Booklist
Hooks brings passion and an updated perspective from her Teaching to Transgress (1994) to this challenging look at the failings of educational institutions and how we can bring hope and renewal to teaching. Drawing on her own experiences, she melds anecdote, autobiography, and critical analysis in an exploration of a range of issues, from educational standards to the unchallenged use of education in support of "capitalist patriarchy." For truly effective education, she advocates partnerships between students and teachers and the expansion of teaching beyond school settings to include community organizations and other more public arenas. Furthermore, noting the reluctance to discuss social injustices, hooks advocates teaching as an opportunity to confront racial and sexual biases, and to heighten consciousness of students across race, ethnicity, and sexual orientations. In a chapter on the attitudes of whites regarding racism, hooks demonstrates that true racial equality requires profound individual efforts to understand "the truth of our essential humanness." For readers interested in cultural criticism and educational issues, hooks offers her usual thought-provoking viewpoint. Vanessa Bush

Review

"Fans of hooks's earlier works, especially the landmark Teaching To Transgress, will welcome this new collection of essays on combating racism and sexism in education. Drawing extensively on her personal experiences as both student and teacher, hooks articulates a vision of democratic, progressive education that focuses on the classroom as a 'life-sustaining and mind-expanding' place. As with her previous books, her latest is passionate, opinionated, and challenging. While her statement that a '[commitment] to teaching well is a commitment to service' will attract some, her claims that racism, sexism, and class conflict are driving forces in the curriculum and in relations between teachers and students will unsettle many. Despite its challenging nature (or, more likely, because of it), the collection will interest students of education, ethnic and cultural studies, and women's studies." -- Library Journal

"Refreshingly original thinking about spirituality, family values, and even erotic relationships between professors and students...The author's clear and consistent voice for progressive, democratic education adds an important dimension to society's thinking about shared values and the creation of a loving and fair community." -- Publishers Weekly

"Teaching Community is magnificent. Educators, learners, and intellectuals will find the book to be an eye opening piece of work. [hook's] mastery of language, as it always does, creates a highly stimulating space from which readers can learn and actively participate in the analytical process. Black, white, male, female, teacher, and student should read the book for themselves and for the beloved community." -- Rolling Out

"hooks addresses many other topics of keen interest to all educators at various stages of their careers." -- Rosemary P. Carbine, College of the Holy Cross, Teaching Theology and Religion

bell hooks is one of my all-time favorite authors. She writes with a voice and a heart that seeks to open us to what and to whom we are teaching. She tells it like it is and it is exactly what we need to hear. Her art is that in telling it like it is, she also challenges us to live from our hearts and to live out the hope with and for our students to encourage their learning and development and to transform higher education.

A Good Read about Politics in Education
By S. Lyttle
As to be expected, bell hooks uses direct language to talk about the deficiencies in American culture. What I liked about this book is the hopefulness that is possible to change and be an agent of change. She calls it like it is, which can offend some people. This book is a very good read for anyone interested in creating social justice in education.

Truth
By GoMi
This book by Bell Hooks is absolutely fantastic! She is great at using her personal narratives to convey the mentality of U.S. higher education faculty in a manner that encourages one to pursue professorial teaching as a privilege and purposeful development of students first before anything. Great read for anyone who plans/attends a college university.

The Routledge Encyclopedia of the Historical JesusFrom Routledge

This Encyclopedia brings together the vast array of historical research into the reality of the man, the teachings, the acts, and the events ascribed to him that have served as the foundational story of one of the world's central religions. This kind of historiography is not biography. The historical study of the Jesus stories and the transmission of these stories through time have been of seminal importance to historians of religion. Critical historical examination has provided a way for scholars of Christianity for centuries to analyze the roots of legend and religion in a way that allows scholars an escape from the confines of dogma, belief, and theological interpretation. In recent years, historical Jesus studies have opened up important discussions concerning anti-Semitism and early Christianity and the political and ideological filtering of the Jesus story of early Christianity through the Roman empire and beyond.

Entries will cover the classical studies that initiated the new historiography, the theoretical discussions about authenticating the historical record, the examination of sources that have led to the western understanding of Jesus' teachings and disseminated myth of the events concerning Jesus' birth and death.

Subject areas include:

  • the history of the historical study of the New Testament: major contributors and their works
  • theoretical issues and concepts
  • methodologies and criteria
  • historical genres and rhetorical styles in the story of Jesus
  • historical and rhetorical context of martyrdom and messianism
  • historical teachings of Jesus
  • teachings within historical context of ethics
  • titles of Jesus
  • historical events in the life of Jesus
  • historical figures in the life of Jesus
  • historical use of Biblical figures referenced in the Gospels
  • places and regions
  • institutions
  • the history of the New Testament within the culture, politics, and law of the Roman Empire.

From Booklist
Over the centuries, much of the writing, whether scholarly, popular, or devotional, about Jesus of Nazareth has been Christological rather than historical, the latter defined as an attempt to reconstruct the life and teaching of Jesus of Nazareth by critical historical methods in contrast to understanding the Christ of faith. A new scholarly quest for the Jesus of history has been gaining momentum of late. In this encyclopedia, some 227 entries address “all of the areas involved in the study of the historical Jesus.” The discussion Divorce and remarriage serves as a good illustration of what this reference work seeks to accomplish. Three of the four canonical Gospels report a firm stance on the part of Jesus against divorce, a prohibition by and large reflected in Christian theology and canon law to this day. Historical analysis, however, shows this uncompromising position was out of step with Jewish and Greco-Roman culture at the time. By examining Jesus’ teaching in this context, scholars are now offering new possible interpretations of Jesus’ intentions and meaning. Other entries include such topics as literary genres and rhetorical styles of the period (e.g., Miracle story); institutions important in the lives of the Jewish people (e.g., Households, Jewish); geographic places associated with Jesus (e.g., Bethlehem); and the types and methods of historical criticism employed by scholars in this field (e.g., Authenticity criteria). The entries were written by a group of international scholars and conclude with supplemental bibliographies. What distinguishes this encyclopedia from other biblical and theological reference works is its focus on the Jesus of history. Every entry must be viewed through that lens. Although the content of this encyclopedia is unique, it is also advanced and specialized. Appropriate for theological libraries and research collections. --Christopher McConnell

Review
'Evans and the contributors offer an excellent resource for scholars and students alike. They have produced a well-informed, readable, and reliable guide to the historical Jesus for years to come. The entries give a fine summary of current research and offer well informed orientation.' – Christopher Stenschke, University of South Africa, Review of Biblical Literature

In this study, Charles Ferrall and Anna Jackson argue that the Victorians created a concept of adolescence that lasted into the twentieth century and yet is strikingly at odds with post-Second World War notions of adolescence as a period of "storm and stress." In the enormously popular "juvenile" literature of the period, primarily boys’ and girls’ own adventure and school stories, adolescence is acknowledged as a time of sexual awareness and yet also of a romantic idealism that is lost with marriage, a time when boys and girls acquire adult duties and responsibilities and yet have not had to assume the roles of breadwinner or household manager. The book reveals a concept of adolescence as significant as the Romantic cult of childhood that preceded it, which will be of interest to scholars of both children’s literature and Victorian culture.

Nihilism and the Sublime Postmodern (Literary Criticism and Cultural Theory), by Will Slocombe

This book examines the relationship between nihilism and postmodernism in relation to the sublime, and is divided into three parts: history, theory, and praxis. Arguing against the simplistic division in literary criticism between nihilism and the sublime, the book demonstrates that both are clearly implicated with the Enlightenment. Postmodernism, as a product of the Enlightenment, is therefore implicitly related to both nihilism and the sublime, despite the fact that it is often characterised as either nihilistic or sublime. Whereas prior forms of nihilism are 'modernist' because they seek to codify reality, postmodernism creates a new formulation of nihilism - 'postmodern nihilism' - that is itself sublime. This is explored in relation to a broad survey of postmodern literature in two chapters, the first on aesthetics and the second on ethics. It offers a coherent thesis for reappraising the relationship between nihilism and the sublime, and grounds this argument with frequent references to postmodern literature, making it a book suitable for both researchers and those more generally interested in postmodern literature.

Essential. A crucial revelation on Nihilism!
By Wendy Willowby
I paid $75 for my copy. I was not disappointed. Carefully researched. Well written. Most importantly, its thesis is a groundbreaking direction for those who Study Nietzsche yet still need examples of practical implications of Nihilism on Art, religion and discourse throughout the entire history of philosophical Pessimism. Nihilism and Art are a closer marriage than we suspect, and the sublime--including everything from the romantics all the way back to the Taoist poets--is but the mystic side of Nihilism; If thought is the vehicle which brings us to our breaking point of nullity, the artistic sublime is the revelation of Bataille's "Beyond", where words fail. This book was for me, a crucial link in my studies and opened up several new avenues of investigation. It prompted me to see even greater implications of past works and to challenge my bias that the Post-Modern was in some way alienated from the rest of artistic expression.

I would also recommend the book, "In Grand Purple Robes of Madness" which might serve as a companion to this work, done from a slightly different approach.

Stuart Nicholson's biography of Ella Fitzgerald is considered a classic in jazz literature. Drawing on original documents, interviews, and new information, Nicholson draws a complete picture of Fitzgerald's professional and personal life. Fitzgerald rose from being a pop singer with chart-novelty hits in the late '30s to become a bandleader and then one of the greatest interpreters of American popular song. Amazon.com Review
Ella Fitzgerald, who died in 1996, came from a poverty-stricken background. She was abandoned by her father, possibly abused by her stepfather and lived on the streets as a teenager. As a club singer she had to contend with racism, sexism and advances from predatory men. But in the 1950s, just when Billie Holiday, from a similar background, was falling toward drug addiction and a sordid death, Fitzgerald escaped the seeming inevitability of that fate. Her songbook albums relaunched her career in a new direction, and she became a beloved figure in American jazz, known for her musical precision and luminous clarity. This biography offers an assessment of the emotional strength apparent in both her life and music.

From Publishers Weekly
For his exhaustive biography, Nicholson ( Jazz: The Modern Resurgence ) draws on written accounts of the legendary singer and on interviews with her childhood friends and musicians who have worked with her; he was unable to arrange to talk with Fitzgerald herself. The result is a thorough, dispassionate account of a career that began in 1935 when, at age 17, the singer first appeared in New York City's Apollo Theater and the Harlem Opera House. Nicholson shows how Fitzgerald was advanced by Milt Gabler at Decca and by promoter Norman Granz; he follows the grueling schedule to which she subjected herself and provides lucid analyses of her style and place in the history of jazz and 20th-century popular music. Although there are accounts here of her continuously unhappy love life, Fitzgerald's personality remains obscure, possibly a reflection of a performer to whom nothing other than singing seems to really matter. From Library Journal
Ella Fitzgerald's hit song "A-Tisket, A-Tasket" grabbed national attention in 1938, and over the next three decades she won much popular and critical acclaim. Born in poverty, she rose to perform at Carnegie Hall, becoming wealthy and well liked. Nicholson discusses Fitzgerald's musical influences, places her in the context of swing and bebop, and discusses her career highlights, including the Songbook albums. But he also bemoans the many silly songs she recorded to achieve wide sales and discusses her lack of depth compared with Billie Holiday. A 61-page discography by jazz historian Phil Schaap is said to include previously unknown recordings. Although this biography joins at least four others (some in German), it seems well researched and is recommended for general collections.

Ella the Greatest
By Vincent A. Vetrano
A wonderful story of the greatest, sweetest, most modest, uncomplicated female singer ever. Respected and admired by her musicians and most especially by Frank Sinatra, a legend who adored her.

Enjoyable, enlightening, thoroughly researched.

I'd have given this book 4 1/2 stars given the option. The only reason I didn't give it 5 is that it gets somewhat dry towards the end, but I blame my attention span for some of that. It's full of fascinating stories, tidbits and opinions from musicians, producers, friends and agents who worked with Ella. You'll come away from the book with a new understanding of Ella the person and Ella the musician. You'll learn much about the times and the musicians who created the story of popular music and jazz in America. You'll also have a fascinating guide to her recorded music, the whys and the hows of it, the circumstances that made it wonderful or less than great. I recommend this book!

Every step in recording studio and no other informations
By Sasha
I read this book in for the first time in 1996. and now, second time around, still have the same feeling - Stuart Nicholson had obviously find easier to trace every step Ella Fitzgerald ever made in recording studio, than what she thought, felt and reasons behind her behaviour."A model in research and musical insight?" There is a year-by-year recording dates discography but not one single interview or even quotte!!Yes,Ella was a wonderful, gifted singer, but what eventually came out of this book (between the lines,if you bother to read) is that she was easily and ruthlessly pushed around by Norman Granz (manager) and made him a millionaire, toured 365 days in the year so Granz could collect Picasso paintings & move to Switzerland and that same Granz didnt have understanding for her, making a scene when she couldnt perform as her sister had just died (Duke Ellington stepped to protect her and got a slap on HIS nose instead). If Stuart Nicholson didnt have acces to do interview with Fitzgerald herself or at least some of her close friends,I wonder why did he bother to writte a book at all (just to dig some dirt & discover that she was - maybe?- a victim a child abuse, something that she kept behind her and didnt want to discuss, which we should understand and respect). No matter how appealing singer Ella was,I find repulsive idea of this big woman being lead around by her manager as beast of burden. And they said Billie Holiday was a tragic figure - hey, Billie at least had a good time! At the end of 245 pages,I find this book simply overrated - you can easily find Fitzgerald's discography in every jazz dictionary and perhaps as a subject of his book Nicholson should have consider Norman Granz instead.

Great addition to your library
By J. Aragon
I found this book at the university library and was glad that I was "cruising" the new book stacks. This book was fun to read and some chapters even offered some statistics! This timely book makes the correlation between political humour and satire and the ways in which a good comedian or personality can educate, alienate, and humour audiences alike.

I was the most interested with the sections that discussed the "Daily Show," since I am a big fan of Jon Stewart. I plan on using 3-4 chapters in my American Politics during the summer and fall terms. I also appreciated how the anthology as a whole understands the importance of humor to youth today.

The audience for this book would be primarily college educated and college students in the social sciences and humanities. What would be interesting to read as a companion piece would be a similar anthology looking at more conservative comedians and analyzing their effects on listeners and viewers. This book looked at mainstream comedians who were primarily center or center/moderate/left.

While I'm not too keen on giving more Fox News type more air time, since they pretty much dominate the air waves, I would find this sort of study interesting for teaching purposes.

Overall, this anthology was educational and not surprinsingly hilarious. I'm hopeful that other political scientists will use this book, as well.

Branding New York: How a City in Crisis Was Sold to the World (Cultural Spaces), by Miriam Greenberg

Winner of the 2009 Robert Park Book Award for best Community and Urban Sociology book!

Branding New York traces the rise of New York City as a brand and the resultant transformation of urban politics and public life. Greenberg addresses the role of "image" in urban history, showing who produces brands and how, and demonstrates the enormous consequences of branding. She shows that the branding of New York was not simply a marketing tool; rather it was a political strategy meant to legitimatize market-based solutions over social objectives.

Review

"A cunning, wonderfully dialectical analysis" - Mike Davis, Professor of History, University of California, Irvine

"I love New York. I am equally taken by Miriam Greenberg's fascinating account of how powerful political interests invented this famous slogan as a strategy for asserting their claim over the city's image, resources, policies, and priorities." - Dennis Judd, Professor of Political Science, University of Illinois, Chicago

"This concise work explores the efforts of New York elites to brand their city in order to deal with repeated crises confronting the city in the last third of the 20th century...a well-written and thoroughly researched urban history that makes a valuable contribution to the field. Highly recommended." -- T.A. Aiello, Choice, February 2009

About the Author

Miriam Greenberg is an Assistant Professor in Sociology at the University of California Santa Cruz, and is a visiting scholar at the Center for Urban Research and Policy at Columbia.  Her interests lie at the intersection of urban political economy and media studies.  In particular, her research focuses on the official use of media and marketing in New York City during the fiscal crisis period of the 1970s and the current, post- 9/11 era, exploring the politics of urban representation in times of crisis, as well as the relationship between city marketing and the broader efforts of neoliberal restructuring.

You often hear in academia that cultural analysis should be better integrated with political economy. Usually this means that the latter should disappear beneath 'political' readings of popular cultural texts. But Branding New York actually achieves this feat, showing how neoliberal New York arose after the fiscal crisis of the mid-seventies through a cultural project that defined New York City as the stomping ground of the 'new class' (i.e. 'yuppies', epitomized by the readership of New York magazine) and a safe space for business and tourists. This counterrevolution required real work, not so much because the forces opposing it were well organized (they were not) but because such phenomenon as graffiti (which Greenberg writes sympathetically about as an effort by inner-city youth to assert their right to the city and to be heard), crime, exploitation films like 'Escape from New York', and even serial killers kept interfering with the image makeover (even the cops got into the act--angry about budget cuts, they produced leaflets warning tourists to stay away from 'Fear City'). Greenberg shows the way elite organizing drives to remake NY as a desirable locale for financial business (not its main function in an earlier era when it was dominated by manufacturing) converged with the cultural struggle through the I Love New York campaign, a wildly successful logo and jingle which was underwritten by governmental agencies (its first iteration had a slightly touching, desperate undercurrent, as Broadway casts donated their labor in an effort to lure enough tourists to keep their shows going; a later version just emphasized all the tax breaks and other favors businesses could now receive).
The cultural work that Greenberg describes has now become the 'common sense' predominant in New York, notwithstanding 9-11 (which she devotes a coda to). Much--perhaps a majority--of the city languishes in low paying jobs, lousy schools, a public transit system still getting cut even as population and ridership increases, etc. But New York is now a 'great place to live' for a predominantly white, relatively affluent class, and a great place to do business for financial and real estate interests that get a sympathetic ear from city government beyond the wildest dreams of the seventies. A new cultural struggle will need to be waged if the city is to be remade as a genuinely inclusive space that lives up to the potential of its multicultural population. Greenberg's book should be read closely by anyone interested in doing so.

I recommend the book. It's an important research about NY transformation during the last decades. Sociologists, urban architects and urban antropologists will enjoy it.
