A worthy reference for a highly specialized subject
By B. Marold
This is an expensive book, even by today's standards. It is also the kind of book which may someday soon be ruled extinct by sources such as Wikipedia. But that will not happen as long as Wikipedia is an "open" document system, and we have no idea of the credentials of those who write the articles. But, I suspect this particular volume will survive long after Wikipedia replaces things like A Dictionary of Theology or An Encyclopedia of Philosophy. This is precisely because the subject is so specialized. There are several key aspects of this book which make it better than those earlier book titles, from so august a publisher as the Cambridge University Press.

The first is that the author of every article is clearly and cleanly stated, in full, at the end of each article. There is no decoding of initials by referring to the list of contributors in the front of the book. And, based on a very unscientific sampling, I determine that the authors of these articles are truly expert in their field. For example, the article on Humanism is written by Margaret L. King. I checked in Amazon's book listings and find that Margaret King is the author of eight different books touching on the subject of women in the Late Middle Ages and early Renaissance.

The second is a really nice Bibliography at the end of every article. Not having such a bibliography automatically drops a book like this down one or even two stars in my rating. The Bibliographies include both books and articles. The book was published in 2006, and some bibliographies include citations as late as 2005, although the majority are bunched between 1975 and 2000. I looked at the bibliography on the "beguines", a subject on which I did some research, and found it included all the sources I was expecting.

The book is true to its feminine emphasis. Even though Meister Eckhart was associated with the beguines, he is not mentioned, and there is no entry for him. An even closer association is Peter Abelard with Heloise. There is an article on Heloise, but no article on Abelard.

One of the greatest virtues of a book such as this is the surprises it holds. For example, paging my way through the "c"s, looking for "Convent", I found "conjugal debt", the debt held to exist mutually between two married persons. The first big surprise was the the Medieval canon law was quite even-handed between man and woman, based on Paul's writing in 1 Corinthians 7:4 - 5. This even extended to the extreme case of when one partner contracts leprosy, which is the real thing (Hansen's disease), not the biblical loose reference to practically any kind of rash. The sick partner was relegated to leper colonies, but the uninfected partner was still required to move close to such colonies and help support their mate.

This book is a bit pricy to own, but if the Middle Ages and the Renaissance happens to be especially interesting, this is an excellent guide to information and a very good reference.
