About the Author

Samuel Totten is a Professor at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. He is a co-founding editor of Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal. He has also been a Fulbright Fellow at the Centre for Conflict Management, National University of Rwanda.

Paul R. Bartrop is an honorary fellow in the Faculty of Arts at Deakin University, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, head of the department of history at Bialik College, Melbourne, and a Past President of the Australian Association of Jewish Studies.

About the Author

Josée Johnston is assistant professor of sociology at the University of Toronto. Her major area of research is the sociology of food.  Her work ties together several research threads including globalization, political-ecology, culture and consumerism.

Shyon Baumann is associate professor of sociology at the University of Toronto. He studies the sociology of culture, the arts, and the media. He is the author of Hollywood Highbrow: From Entertainment to Art, and is currently studying the production and content of television advertising.

Great for research or pleasure

I have read this cover to cover at least three times, and it inspired me to write my master's thesis on food (in a linguistics department!). It's a well-organized academic text that will also be appealing to the lay reader, as it's full of insight into the current state of the foodie trend. The authors define foodies as gourmets with a political bent, and I particularly enjoyed the attention this book pays food and identity.

Great piece on Foodie Culture

While there's some things I don't necessarily agree with in this book, it is a great read! Yes, it is very academic in its nature but it doesn't deter me from enjoying this book. Clearly the authors have done their research and have woven together a good and informative book on "foodies". I wish there were more material on colonialism and the role of race and ethnic relations in this book but I understand the material is heavily weighed upon class stuff as well.

Purchased a "Very Good" Women, Science and Technology soft cover textbook, the outside cover had severe wear, which to me is not a "very good" product, however the inside reading material seems to be intact, which is what is important.

Mostly a technical drag

Before I start, I should be fair and say I work with video game studies in an English department, so I am biased towards textual/narrative analyses and the social/ideological implications of games.

To begin, the term "video game theory" already seems misleading. Many of the earlier essays in this collection are dedicated to expanding "game theory" by using video games as examples. While often interesting, I felt that, for the most part, these essays were beating around the bush and had very simplistic theses that were saturated with technical-jargon. This gets to the heart of one of my major problems with this Reader: most of what's going on in it isn't incredibly new or exciting, but just a rehashing of old theories. I was hoping, really, for a more multidisciplinary approach, something that is only gestured to at the end. (And even that chapter, Chapter 16, represents another flaw of this collection: it talks about interdiscplinary work in game studies by summarizing individual projects. Sometimes, more than theory, this collection seems to be a how to guide to receiving funding from universities and the EU, information which is probably not that useful to most readers.)

I felt like for the first five essays I was just reading different interpretations of Huizinga's magic circle. Really, the Reader represents a problem with early video game theory and studies: falling in a hole and not being sure how to get out. While there were, as I have said, interesting things going on in terms of theory, the Reader was inevitably too repetitive and narrow.

Also, the term "theory," though applicable to a lot of this collection, isn't a useful term for some of the essays. A few (especially the one on the Z-axis) were just a historical look at one part of video gaming design. Again, a topic which deserves to be written about, but not really in a "theory" book that already beats graphic design to death. So, because of it's limited scope and, really, lack of vision, I have to give two stars.

Secure and Tranquil Travel is applied criminology at its best. Written for those with an interest in managing rail, bus, and underground transport services, the book offers what is essentially a step-by-step guide on how to identify and mitigate various kind of crime and disorder on public transit facilities. Using the SARA model (Scanning, Analysis, Response, and Assessment), the contributors examine anti-social behaviour, crimes against passengers, crimes against employees, vandalism and graffiti, and line-of-route crimes. In its entirety, the book is a wonderful resource in the most applied sense. While its pragmatism might be disconcerting for those with an appreciation for critical criminology, the way in which the contributors bring criminological theory, methodological insight, and empirical evidence to bear on real-world problems is intellectually refreshing. Holding the book together is a whole-hearted embrace of opportunity-based theories of crime. With each chapter drawing heavily from advances in rational choice and routine activity theory, situational crime prevention, and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, one is treated to a detailed analysis of how the spatial and temporal flow of passengers, staff, and would-be offenders, when combined with an amenable physical environment, can set the stage for crime and disorder. What makes the book particularly interesting is the way it makes criminological theory and research speak to the organizational demands and concerns of the public transportation industry,including issues and/or concerns about staffing, efficiency, ridership, public relations, and revenue generation. Thus, the book will likely catch the interest of those working in the industry. The methodological rigor of Secure and Tranquil Travel is worth noting. Using the SARA model, the authors bring to light just how critically important it is that preliminary research flesh out crime and disordera⠬⠢s situationally specific characteristics. While acknowledging the problems that inevitably follow from a⠬÷cookie-cuttera⠬ solutions to crime and disorder, the contributors manage to walk that fine line between applying tried-and-true solutions on one hand, and focussing on situational variation on the other. It is this balance that gives the book its sense of cautious, scientific optimism. Although academic reviews rarely comment on a booka⠬⠢s design or layout, I believe it is necessary here. Secure and Tranquil Travel makes extensive and effective use of photography. As a result, problems of crime and disorder are brought to life in their natural settings, offering the reader a unique opportunity to evaluate criminogenic environments in a way that is as close as it gets to an actual site visit. However, the booka⠬⠢s pragmatism is slightly disconcerting in so far as its emphasis on a⠬÷what might worka⠬ leaves little room for more difficult discussions about the cultural politics surrounding crime, disorder, and especially fear. Of course, proponents of situational crime prevention are rarely forthright about such matters, choosing instead to focus exclusively on the criminal event as an a-political phenomenon as opposed to the biographical origins of the offender or the structural causes of criminality. While it might have been difficult to acknowledge the relevance of race, gender, or socio-economic status as critical factors in the aetiology of fear (for example) given the booka⠬⠢s target audience, these issues should have been raised nonetheless. The importance of racism, gender discrimination, and inequality must remain part of the broader discussion when it comes to explaining and perhaps solving issues of crime and disorder. Unfortunately, Secure and Tranquil Travel offers a mere nod in that direction. Finally, a pedagogical note: adopting the book as a required reading in a university setting would be a challenge given its exclusive focus on public transit. That being said, however, the book would make a phenomenal resource for instructors looking to introduce case study material into their lectures and/or seminars and would thereby provide that sense of a⠬÷hands ona⠬ training which so many undergraduate criminology and sociology students seem to appreciate. Following an introduction to Andersen's life and personality, Zipes explores his subject's prodigious output of works including travel books, essays, novels, plays, autobiographies, and 156 fairy tales, only a few of which were actually written for children. Two further chapters, The Discourse of the Dominated (a discussion of Andersen's deep ambivalence about class issues) and The Discourse of Rage and Revenge: Controlling Children (a discussion of Andersen's attitudes toward children and childhood) are revised versions of essays previously published elsewhere. A final chapter, The Cinematic Appropriation of Andersen's Heritage: Trivialization and Innovation, looks at both American and European films made from his works. Zipes compares those that build on Andersen's own messages and those that simply use his motifs and characters as commodities to be repackaged and sold. The book is illustrated with prints from 19th- and early-20th-century editions of his works that help to place Andersen in a historical context. A bibliography, film bibliography, and extensive notes are included. This book belongs in libraries with readers who are interested in critical interpretations of folklore and film, and those with collections of critical biographies or extensive collections of Andersen's works. This book is not as dry as my review!

As one who had never heard the term Chick Lit before reading reviews of Emily Barr's "Backpack," I gotta thank Ferriss, Young, and their 14 contributors for 'splaining it to me. Some of the essays, like those by Mazza and Guerrero, make critical points with style and wit worth reading for themselves. But even the essay that reads like a dissertation chapter and the structuralist analysis help define Chick Lit and relate it not just to classics by Burney and Austen but also to chronologically closer predecessors by Atwood, Bombeck, Jong, Acker and others.

I admired the rather sour take on the genre by Wells, who backs up her criticism with comparisons of the craft of foremothers Austen, Bronte and Wharton with Fielding, Weisberger and Kinsella. Not that I agree with her, but it is refreshing to have an articulate naysayer in the collection of essays.

Most of the essayists use comparison well, but Kiernan's "No Satisfaction: Sex and the City, Run Catch Kiss, and the Conflict of Desires in Chick Lit's New Heroines" shows very clearly why Sohn's novel is a more disturbing read.

The index is excellent. It's easy to see that authors Fielding and Austen get the most refs, but what really help are the subheadings under the term "chick lit." Since Amazon doesn't have LOOK INSIDE for this edition at present, here are some of the subheadings: "female friendships and," "genre's formula, discussion of," "confessional narrative (instant messaging) style,"--very useful!

So does the publication of a scholarly but lively collection of essays mark the end of this genre (yeah, what ever happened to cyberpunk?)? I doubt it. Ferriss and Young's book convinced me that there has been a sea-change in contemporary fiction and provided a ton of new titles to read.

It's a great book for who's studying chick lit, independent of the study area. I was seeing it from a perspective of brand and advertising and it was unique. Helped a lot.

About the Author

Lawrence Vale is the Head of the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at MIT. He has published six previous books, including the first edition of Architecture, Power, and National Identity,  which received the Spiro Kostof Award from the Society of Architectural Historians.

interesting book but defective binding

This is the second copy of this book I have received from Amazon. The binding cracked in the first copy after an hour of reading. The first thirty pages fell out. Amazon replaced the first copy with a second, but the same thing happened. The binding cracked and about thirty pages fell out after just a few minutes of reading. I want to read this book and haven't returned my second copy, but the binding is obviously defective. You expect more from a $58 book!
