An important addition to your folklore library

Here the inexhaustible Jack Zipes edits and translates a lesser known, but arguably very important, collection of Sicilian folk and fairy tales. Originally collected and recorded by Laura Gonzenbach in mid-19th century Sicily, these tales provide a different perspective on the folklore of the time and ours today. Zipes argues that this collection is perhaps the most important collection from the time period, even more important than the Grimms' collection. The tales are unadulterated, carefully recorded to reflect the voice of the original teller. Since Gonzenbach collected primarily from women tellers and was herself female, the feminine perspective of the tales hearkens back to the French Salons albeit at a different class level. Be warned that these tales have not been softened and at times reflect the violence, cruelty, and unfairness of life with clear language; these stories are not for the nursery. Zipes' comprehensive introduction and endnotes (including Aarne-Thompson classification numbers) enhance the scholarly weight of the text, but the stories can be read strictly for the enjoyment of the armchair folklorist.
This collection is especially recommended for readers interested in 19th century folktale collections, feminist folklore and Sicily.

If you have Italian heritage, this is a must. My husband, for whom it was a gift, and I take it with us on vacations and take turns reading the stories. Again, if you want a glimpse into old Italian folklore, this is for you.

of questionable value and provenance

I question the value because, while the stories are entertaining and do indeed exhibit a uniquely Sicilian flair, the plot lines are extremely familiar. To be sure, both Gonzenbach/Zipes books are completely subsumed by Italo Calvino's monumental work under Pantheon's colophon. I question the provenance because--some years after Zipes "discovered" Gonzenbach's $35 trove of Sicilian tales--he mysteriously just happened to "discover" a complementary $35 trove. Hmm ... I guess sticking to the ol' two-stage discovery paradigm doubles your revenues.

A great introduction to Freud

This is an extremely well-written and accessible introduction to Freudian psychology, especially what Freud has to tell us about the emotional needs and desires of men and women. Boothby's writing is not at all pedantic. in fact, it's pretty fun. "Sex on the Couch" is clearly designed to be read by people with no particular background in psychology. By examining many different aspects of our intimate life and human culture through the lens of our emotional interests, ambivalences, and defenses, and by placing these in the central context of our sexuality, Boothby gives us a very useful (you might even say practically useful) means for understanding ourselves and the society we live in. This is not in any way pop psychology. Nevertheless, it a very readable, engaging and lucid book. If I were a parent I'd give it to my son or daughter when they reached college age. But anyone of any age can greatly profit from reading it.

If you're buying this book because you are taking Sociology of Mental Illness at UNO, run away!!!!! This and the book by Bowers not that easy to read and the professor is a perv. The class discussions generated from this book are stupid. You will gain nothing.

The book sensitively addresses the growing pains of new teachers as they examine difficult issues and it brings us all to a deeper understanding of our own beliefs.

It is the follow up to Wolin’s two recent, widely acclaimed books: Heidegger’s Children and The Seduction of Unreason. In those books, he explored the legacy of Martin Heidegger and his impact on some of his most influential and notable students. He dealt particularly with the effect that Heidegger’s subsequent embrace of fascism and National Socialism had on these students. Delving further in his next book, Wolin explored the question of why philosophers and intellectuals have been drawn to antiliberal, antidemocratic fascism.

The essays in this book are focused on European Political Thought particularly with figures associated with the Frankfurt School. The collection represents a virtual who’s who of European political thinkers with essays on Walter Benjamin, Adorno, Marcuse, Arendt, Heidegger, Weber, Jaspers, and Carl Schmitt. Moving beyond these thinkers and those books, this collection will also include essays on contemporary political issues such as post-communist revolutions, human rights, global democracy, the revival of republicanism, and religion and public life.
