While Yeats uses theosophy's metaphysical world view to provide an underlying structure for some of his earliest poetry and drama, he uses theosophy's methods of investigation and argument to discover a metaphysical literary tradition which incorporates all of his own literary heroes into an Irish cultural tradition. Theosophy provides a methodology for Yeats to argue that both Shelley and Blake (for example) are part of a tradition that includes himself. Basing his argument in theosophy, Yeats can argue that the Irish people are a distinct race with a culture more "sincere" and "natural" than that of England.

About the Author

Julie A. Mertus is a professor of human rights at American University and co-director of the Ethics, Peace and Global Affairs Program. She has been a Senior Fellow at the U.S. Institute of Peace, a fellow in human rights at Harvard Law School, a MacArthur Foundation Fellow, a Fulbright Fellow and a Counsel to Human Rights Watch. She is the author of five books, including Kosovo: How Myths and Truths Started a War.

Helen Ostovich is Professor of English at McMaster University. She is editor of Ben Jonson's Every Man Out of His Humour and Ben Jonson: Four Comedies, and coeditor of Other Voices, Other Views: Expanding the Canon in English Renaissance Studies.

Elizabeth Sauer is Professor of Early Modern English Literature at Brock University. She currently holds a Chancellor's Research Chair. She is author of Barbarous Dissonance and Images of Voice in Milton's Epics, and coeditor of Imperialisms: Historical and Literary Investigations 1500-1900, Milton and the Imperial Vision, and Books and Readers in Early Modern England.

About the Author
Meg Kennedy Dugan, M.A., is Director of the AmeriCorps Victim Assistance Program, a program of the New Hampshire Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence. She is Chair of the Public Education Committee and Executive Committee Member of the Governor’s Commission on Domestic and Sexual Violence. She has served on numerous statewide domestic and sexual violence committees. Previously, she was Director of Counseling at New England College. She has presented widely at conferences and appeared on various television and radio programs.

Roger R. Hock, Ph.D., is Director of the Psychology Program and Professor of Psychology and Human Sexuality at Mendocino College in Ukiah, California. He received his M.A. from San Diego State University and his Ph.D. from the University of California at San Diego. His books in the fields of psychology and human sexuality have been adopted at over 250 colleges and universities internationally and have been translated into several languages.

An Invaluable Help in the Healing Process

It's My Life Now fills an important gap in the literature on domestic violence. There are several great books out there that help bring the abused to the point of recognizing that they are in an abusive relationship that they must escape. These books help clarify the patterns and cycles that are common to so many abusive relationships. When searching for help and healing myself, I largely encountered books that told me how to get out, get safe, and (had I any children) get custody. But at that point, I had already fought my way out of my abuser's grasp and was searching for something to help me untangle the webs of control, humiliation, and verbal abuse I had endured. I was also struggling with difficult feelings of guilt, loss, and anger that I needed some guidance to process. That is where this book came in: the practical guide to regaining yourself after enduring abuse and/or violence.

What is so valuable and remarkable about this book, compared to many others, is that it walks the abused through the complicated (and admittedly frightening) time AFTER she gets out of the relationship.

It begins with the typical identification of abuse and abusive behaviors, but as this book is written for those who have already left their abuser, this list serves a different purpose. In an incredibly reassuring and helpful chapter that addresses the feelings of love for the abuser that may still remain, we are asked to make a list of the qualities that were attractive in him in the first place. Then, we return to the initial chapter's list of abusive behaviors and make a list of what type of abuses were committed and with what frequency. The positive list serves to reassure the abused that she had compelling reasons for being attracted to the abuser, while the abuses list reminds her that the abuser (however charming) is not who he seemed. There are many more simple, journal-style exercises that I found important for gaining insight and perspective.

The book addresses key issues I encountered in the uncomfortable period that ensued within one week or two of leaving my abuser. The author also recommends that readers return to these topics and exercises one month later, for comparison. (Perspective is everything.) I have emphatically recommended this book to the women I have met in domestic violence support groups, who have returned nothing but praise for the usefulness, pertinence and clarity of It's My Life Now. I have found it invaluable in my own process and will continue to refer to it when I require strength or guidance.

This book is hard to read because of the way the truth hurts so bad. It's an excellent book for you if you've been in an abusive relationship and still not sure whether you want to let go of the past or give him another chance, because sometimes we get confused and attached to the abuse. But, this book is going to make sure you do the correct thing by yourself, let go...own your life and move on. It will help you to heal and put the past behind you. You deserve the best. You are the best. A must read for all the people who have lost themselves due to abuse. Remember, you're special and don't let anything he told you bring you down.. before reading this book, i used to be confused about why I still want to love the abuser despite of everything he did to me. But after reading this book, which I am ever so thankful, I know what i want and need and want i am. It definitely does not include the abuser. I'm happy to finally have found the strength to believe in myself and i would not have done so without this wonderful book.

Good for general information

I was excited to get this book, but it turns out that if you've read Lundy Bancroft or Patricia Evan's works then this book is fairly redundant. If you are new to verbal/emotional abuse and recovery then this is a great book to get you started. It addresses many topics in a very general way and has helpful information, but after reading the two authors listed above this book just didn't prove to be very helpful for me.

Worth having on the shelf

This is the only book that I plan to keep after my first semester of a graduate-level teacher training program (and, based on the ed professor's customer review of this book, I am not alone). Here's why I like it:
1) Breadth. It offers information on most if not all of the teaching methods and classroom skills a teacher may want. This makes it a great reference tool. Read a chapter or part of a chapter when you need it.
2) Clarity. I find a lot of education-related books to be pretty nebulous, but this one cuts right to the meat of every issue with its clear, well written definitions and examples.
3) Size. A medium-sized paperback. It fits in your bag or on your shelf without much of a struggle. I do wish it were available on Kindle, but not yet.
4) Chapter summaries. Each chapter ends with a concise but thorough summary of the key concepts. Whether you're a practicing teacher or a teacher in training, time is of the essence; in a pinch, just read the summaries. They're excellent.
5) No stupid graphics! So many education books are full of charts and other visuals that add weight to the book, kill trees, and, worst of all, waste your time because all they do is restate what the text says. None of that here.
To summarize, this book the leanest, meanest teaching methods book that I've come across.

well-regarded by inservice and preservice teachers

As an education professor of mostly graduate students already in the classroom, I was impressed by how often I was told that this was one text that would be kept for future reference. Teachers found it to be well-written, organized, and practical--yet professionally rigorous. Of all the texts I've used, this one was the most highly regarded.

Perfect size for a textbook

I have not read too deeply into the book yet, but it is required for a graduate course I'm taking. I really love the size of the book. It's full of valuable information, but doesn't take up space with text that is too big, or unnecessary images. Paperback and lightweight.

Good for students

If you're looking for a good anthology of the contemporary debates in metaphysics, this is a good book. It is appropriate for undergraduate philosophy courses and will prove useful to anyone who wants a nice survey of contemporary metaphysical debates. If you're looking for anything above a simple anthology of the debates, look elsewhere. My only complaint is that there is not enough discussion of Quantum mechanics or relativity but those debates get esoteric quickly so I can understand their absence.

Loux is an academic on the faculty of Notre Dame University, which is near South Bend, Indiana. In my personal experience I found the Notre Dame philosophers distressed by the contemporary pragmatic realism that prevails in the literature today. They have a Panglossian belief in rationalism, which I expect has broad-based sympathy in other Catholic philosophy schools. In the final section of this book, as in his previous writings, Loux calls contemporary pragmatism "antirealism." His locution "realism"/"antirealism" are a polemical caricature, a distortion due to a failure to understand the motivating origins of contemporary pragmatism.

Quine is typical of pragmatic realists. His paper "Ontological Relativity" is included in this book. But in his earlier writings Loux rejected Quine's thesis of ontological relativity, which Quine also calls "referential inscrutability", and Loux is unsympathetic to Quine in this book also. Philosophy has been changed in a fundamental way due to the two great revolutionary developments in twentieth-century physics. Both Einstein and Heisenberg practiced ontological relativity. In his Across the Frontiers Heisenberg describes how Einstein construed relativistic space and time realistically, and how he himself then construed his own uncertainty relations realistically.

Here are some basic pragmatist ideas to consider:
(1) Metaphysical realism is the thesis that there exists mind-independent reality accessible to human knowledge. The thesis is literally a prejudice that is neither a conclusion, nor an inference nor an extrapolation. It is primal and is simply accepted, and is probably recognized at the dawn of one's distinction between self and surroundings.

Contrary to Loux's claim, Quine talks explicitly about realism. And he seems quite emphatic affirming what he calls his "unregenerate realism." In "Scope and Language of Science" in his The Ways of Paradox and Other Essays, Revised Edition Quine wrote: "We cannot significantly question the reality of the external world or deny that there is evidence for external objects in the testimony of our senses; for, to do so is simply to dissociate the terms `reality' and `evidence' from the very applications which originally did most to invest these terms with whatever intelligibility they may have for us." In the next sentence he wrote metaphorically further emphasizing the primitive nature of the realist conviction: "We imbibe an archaic natural philosophy with our mother's milk." (p. 516).

Likewise in his The Construction of Social Reality Searle, a realist, maintains that there can be no argument for realism that is not question-begging (p. 184). However, this understanding of the primitive and prejudicial nature of metaphysical realism is incomprehensible to rationalist Notre Dame philosophers like Loux.

(2) Ontology on the other hand consists of the features and aspects of reality that are captured by our descriptive beliefs, and especially by the language of science, which becomes more empirically adequate through growth of experience including scientific development. Ontology is thus reality that is language-dependent for our apprehension. It is direct but not simple. Recognition of ontological relativity means that philosophers and scientists need no longer associate realism with any single privileged ontology, and then reject the realism in past science or common sense.

For example, the famous solar-eclipse experiment of 1919 vindicated Einstein's theory of gravitation over Newton's. Yet today NASA continues to use Newtonian physics to navigate rockets through the solar system, and Newton's theory is still seen as descriptive of reality. Thus the ontology described by Einstein's theory is more realistic than that described by Newton's. Furthermore the pragmatists need not say as Popper does in The Logic of Scientific Discovery (Routledge Classics) that science cannot achieve truth, because as Jarret Leplin can say, Einstein's theory is the truer.

A Notre Dame philosopher, Loux longs for good-old-fashioned traditional metaphysics. He is not of our time. Like the Thomists, Aristotelians are a vanishing breed, and Loux is a cultural atavism. His world is that of his book Primary Ousia and of his several journal articles on Aristotle. I found little evidence that he understands the contemporary pragmatist philosophy of language and of science, the problems that occasioned its development, and how it solves the problems of today.

I found no reference to relativity theory in the section on the topic of time in Loux's book. The section on the topic of causality makes no mention of the issues in the uncertainty relations in quantum theory. In this connection a much more sophisticated and relevant discussion of causality can be found in Hanson's Patterns of Discovery: An Inquiry into the Conceptual Foundations of Science.

The sections on universals and particulars cover his favorite perennial quarrels. Loux calls Quine an "austere" nominalist. But in his autobiography The Time of My Life: An Autobiography Quine denies that he is a nominalist, because he accepts the existence of classes, which he views as a kind of "abstract entity." He accepts the existence of classes, because he could not eliminate them in the logistic reductionist programme. And his famous refrain "To be is to be the value of a variable" does not decide between nominalism and realism. Quine merely believes that it enables expression of one or the other view depending on whether or not one chooses to bind a predicate with a quantifier. He rejects "mental entities", but in his Word and Object (Studies in Communication) he proposes "stimulus meanings", which he says are universal. His nominalism is not easily described as "austere."

Overall I found this 625-page book to be both frivolous and tedious. With ontological relativity much that had formerly been speculative metaphysics has been decided by empirical science. This basically is Quine's "naturalized epistemology" thesis and his rejection of "first philosophy." Thus most of Loux's selections amount to pedantic speculations. Loux's book might offer inconsequential entertainment to some tenured academics. But for more contemporary and consequential philosophy I invite readers to read Twentieth-Century Philosophy of Science: A History.
