About the Author
George Kamberelis is an associate professor in the Department of Reading at the University at Albany, SUNY. His teaching and research focus on social and cultural dimensions of educational practice, philosophical foundations of inquiry, and media literacies. His work has appeared in books and journals across a range of disciplines-literacy, education, linguistics, psychology, legal studies, qualitative inquiry, and human geography.

Dense but helpful overview

I can think of two ways to introduce a theorist - by simplifying core ideas, well exemplified; or by short, abstract, expository summaries of thought. This book does the latter. Short on examples, but relatively clear on key theoretical constructs, with consistent links to further reading.

As a late-career professor with a cognitive-psych and instructional-design background, these literary/critical theorists are new territory for me - and that's the fun. Seems like this best is best suited for academics already fairly fluent in abstractions. Not sure how a master's or beginning doctoral student would respond - haven't tried it yet.

This book, which arose from the demands of Coontz's family history course at Evergreen State College, continues the project Coontz ably began in four previous monographs (most recently, The Way We Really Are, LJ 4/1/97). The 29 chapters have been multifariously culled, many excerpted from books, with the aim of showing varieties of family life when factors of race, class, gender, locale, and different historical periods are considered independently. There are, for instance, chapters about African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, Filipinas, Vietnamese, Chinese, immigrants, lesbians, motherhood, the poor, teenage mothers, and class consciousness in various times and places. There are no articles about middle- or upper-class families or those of northern European origin. Some of the authors are well known (e.g., W.J. Wilson, Thomas J. Sugrue), while others are newcomers. Good...but still very academic

This really is an excellent book, full of really clear and well-organized information on some very important, often over-looked issues in sociology and family development issues. But I still found it a little too academic-oriented. Am looking for something more accessible to not-well-educated people I work with in my job, families who are not readers. Stories and content are useful to me, however, in a big way, as both a community-based worker and as a serious student of these types of "non-traditional" but very current issues. I appreciated the book alot, but it still isn't quite "earthy" enough to use with non-academically-oriented clients...other than via me telling them some of the real life "stories" encountered in the book. I give it three stars and wait for a second edition!

A Reader

This is an excellent book for students of sociology, family history, human development or other fields that explore family life as it exists in our world today.

I especially appreciate how the author expands the reader's understanding of family forms from the common view of The Family as a mother/father, white, middle class, with two children "Ozzie and Harriot" stereotype to a more realistic understanding of the complexities of families in this country. I enjoyed reading stories that revealed how the factors of race, class, and gender effect families in our society. I also appreciated the inclusion of family stories that reveal the impact of historical contexts. For example, the stories from immigrants reveal how our society has historically valued labor as a means for profit over labor as a means to support families.

I didn't find the text to be overly academic, but rather fascinating, accessible and informative.

Jennings Bryant, communication series editor: The authors' arguments for its need are cogent, and I do see this as a valid next step for collecting and organizing a new generation of research literature on family communication. Certainly a great deal of current research in family communication falls within the purview that the volume has adopted.

John Caughlin, University of Illinois: I think the biggest strength is that this really is carving out a new niche. I don’t know of any similar type of project. Also, the editors seem to have complementary kinds of experiences that should allow for a good collaboration (again). One weakness is that because the area is fairly new, several of the chapters look like they will be preliminary or even speculative. I see this problem as a reasonable trade-off for attempting something that is pretty unique. I see this book as having the potential to be influential in among family communication scholars. It’s too focused to be adopted as a primary text, but I could see using it as a secondary text in a family communication course. I doubt it will be a 'best seller' because of the relatively narrow scope, but I also think that it’s a fairly low risk project. The editors and several of the authors are well known in communication, and that will ensure reasonably good sales to faculty and graduate students in communication.

 Tammy Afifi, UC Santa Barbara: I think the topics are very good and quite interesting. I think it would be a good draw for researchers and family members interested in contemporary family life. But, I question the rigor of the text. I’m just hoping that there is enough solid research to back up each of the chapters. The chapters also seem as though they aren’t that theory-driven. I would make sure that the chapters are tied to theory in some way to give the book more substance. [The editors] are quite well known in family communication and I’m sure would be a draw for a good readership. Glen Stamp, in particular, is known for his qualitative work in family communication. Tom Socha is also very respected for his books, his leadership in the field, and as editor of the Journal of Family Communication. I think the primary strength is the timely nature of the topic. When I first read the title of the proposed book, I wasn’t that intrigued. But, then I read the proposed individual chapters and was delighted by the topics themselves….very timely and appealing to today’s busy and diverse families.

Patricia Noller, University of Queensland: One of my concerns about the content as a whole, is that, as with most edited books, it is somewhat opportunistic. By this I mean, that rather than providing overviews of the particular areas of parent-child communication outside the family such as in areas of health, education, and sport, many of the chapter authors are presenting their latest research in the area, research that is sometimes on the edge of the area rather than central to it. In terms of the primary audience for this volume, I suspect that it would be mainly a resource for specialists in parent-child communication outside the family. It could become a resource for physicians, teachers and child-care operators, but in each case, only a couple of chapters are relevant. I doubt that it could become a textbook in courses on family communication, or for general courses on the family, but some of the chapters could be resources for such courses. I think the authors are overoptimistic in their suggestions with regard to the likely audience. I have not seen anything that I would consider competition for this volume. Nevertheless, in order for it to be successful I think it needs to provide chapters on more mainstream issues, and fewer on the more esoteric aspects of the topic.

About the Author

Thomas J. Socha is ODU University Professor and Associate Professor of Communication at Old Dominion University. He is the founding editor of the Journal of Family Communication, and received the NCA’s Bernard J. Brommel Award for Outstanding Scholarship and Distinguished Service in Family Communication. His publications include books, chapters and articles about various facets of family communication.

Glen H. Stamp is a Professor, Department Chair, and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Communication Studies at Ball State University. He has previously published one book (with Thomas J. Socha) on parent-child communication as well as authoring numerous articles and chapters in interpersonal communication and family communication.

About the Author

John H. Beck is Professor Emeritus of Percussion and has been a member of the Eastman faculty since 1959. The Percussive Arts Society inducted him into the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame (1999) and presented him with an Outstanding Service Award (2002). He received both the Eastman School of Music Eisenhart Award for excellence in teaching (1997) and the Edwin Peck Curtis Award for excellence in undergraduate teaching (2003). Since retirement in 2008, he has been awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the New York State School Music Association (2009), The President’s Award from Rowan University (2010), the Lifetime Achievement Award from KOSA International Percussion (2010) and the Life Time Achievement Award from Giornate della Percussione, Fermo, Italy (2010). His book Percussion Matters: Life at the Eastman School of Music was published in December 2011 by Meliora Press an imprint of the University of Rochester Press. The John H. Beck Composition Prize was established by Percussion Rochester in 2012.

About the Author

Michael L. Benson is Professor of Criminal Justice at the University of Cincinnati. He is a past President of the White-Collar Crime Research Consortium. In addition to numerous journal articles on white-collar crime, he co-authored Combating Corporate Crime: Local Prosecutors at Work, which received the 2000 Outstanding Scholarship Award of the Crime and Delinquency Division of the Society for the Study of Social Problems.

Sally S. Simpson is Professor and Chair of the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Maryland, College Park. She currently serves as Chair of the Crime, Law, and Deviance Section of the American Sociological Association. She is past President of the White-Collar Crime Research Consortium, and a recipient of the Herbert Bloch Award from the American Society of Criminology.

A Scholarly Masterpiece

George Yancy's philosophical eye is most acute at examining "What White Looks Like." This scholarly gem critiques, theorizes, and centers the burgeoning field of whiteness studies from the perspective of African-American philosophers. Assembled in this text are a cadre of erudite philosophers like Charles W. Mills and Robert E. Birt who break new philosophical ground while they consider and question "accepted" theories on race espoused by patricians such as Foucault, Hegel, and Kant. This unique examination of whiteness by these scholars offers fresh insights that are useful to both the scholar and the student. I highly recommend this work as a must read for all who are interested in this most fascinating field.

An indispensable contribution to Critical Whiteness Studies

While the groundbreaking scholarship of David Roediger and others may have gotten Critical Whiteness Studies as a scholarly field of inquiry off the ground, George Yancy's edited text, originally entitled _Whiteness Unveiled_, makes a critical and indispensable contribution to this collaborative pursuit. Insofar as whiteness as a philosophical concept is to be analyzed and critiqued, Yancy's text makes an interesting move by viewing and unveiling the ideologies of whiteness and white privilege via African-American philosophical perspectives (Whiteness Studies, while enjoying an interdisciplinarity which includes history, sociology, and legal theory, has not been explicitly thematized by philosophers until now).
The introduction by Yancy, and the chapters by Charles Mills, Lewis Gordon, Robert Birt, Clevis Headley, and Paget Henry are most revealing and intriguing pieces of philosophical literature.
Overall, this text signals a critical moment in the development of Africana thought, and I wholeheartedly agree with J. Everet Green's blurb on the back of the book when he says that this book is a "philosophical treat."

Part 2 examines the journeys of a composer and a group of students to highlight the process of becoming an artist and the role education plays in its development. The book concludes with a focus on the development of aesthetic appreciation and artistic activity in childhood and adolescence, including, for example, how a child’s developing theory of mind affects appreciation for the arts, and how developing empathy and emotional regulation contribute to the cognitive and affective underpinnings of acting in adolescence. As a whole contributors explore the developmental, sociocultural, and evolutionary processes that make the creation and experience of art possible.

About the Author

Constance Milbrath is a senior researcher  at the Human Early Learning Partnership at the University of British Columbia. She received her Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Her research focuses on individual differences in the underpinnings of drawing and aesthetic competence in children, the influence of cultural differences on adolescent relationships, and the development of a clinical instrument aimed at assessing structure of personality. A Fellow of the APA, Dr. Milbrath is also a member of Division 10, the Society for the Psychology of Aesthetics, Creativity and the Arts.

Cynthia Lightfoot is a Professor and Program Director of Human Development and Family Studies at Penn State University, Brandywine. She received her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.  Her research focuses on the cultural contexts of development.  She has served as Vice President to, and is currently on the Board of Directors of the Jean Piaget Society.

Using formal assessment instruments in counseling and psychotherapy is an efficient and systematic way to obtain information about clients and to subsequently tailor a counseling approach most likely to serve clients optimally. The more information a counselor obtains during the initial interview and first sessions, the more likely the client will be deeply understood by the counselor, which in turn increases the likelihood that an appropriate course of counseling will be taken, and ultimately leading to a more successful outcome.  The Integral Intake is an idiographic, biographical, multidimensional assessment instrument based upon the Integral Psychology pioneered by Ken Wilber.  From the perspective of Integral theory, comprehensive and holistic conceptualization of clients seeking counseling and psychotherapy includes knowledge of four distinct perspectives (quadrants) of each client: the client’s experience (the individual viewed subjectively/from within), the client’s behavior (the client viewed objectively/from without), the client’s culture (the client’s system viewed subjectively/from within), and the client’s social system (the client’s system viewed objectively/from without).  The intake form is designed to provide the practitioner with a range of background information that can then be used to more quickly and effectively formulate a counseling/treatment approach.  The assessment form and accompanying materials will be included on a companion CD, formatted to be printed and reproduced for use with each new client.  The book will provide an overview of the Integral Psychology model, describe the development of the assessment form and its use, and provide general guidelines for the evaluation of responses and planning for an appropriate counseling approach.  A series of case examples, based on actual completed intake forms, will provide insight into the use of the Integral Intake.

The first and one of the best books on the subject

Marquis is one of the leading figures in the field of Integral Psychotherapy, and this text was the first by a practicing clinician applying the model to the counseling profession. This text serves many purposes extremely well: It provides an outstanding, clearly written introduction to the Integral model, explores its applications in psychotherapy, and elucidates the power of the Integral approach in guiding a truly holistic assessment of the client. Importantly, Marquis' grounds his claims concerning the efficacy and superiority of the Integral Intake instrument in a well-designed research project that gathered clinician feedback and compared his instrument to other widely used written intakes. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in the field of Integral Psychotherapy.

Research indicates that therapists of several theoretical orientations -- even those that have their own theory-based intake instruments -- have favored the Integral Intake. This book is a must for any mental health professional dedicated to a holistic understanding of one's clients.
