From Booklist
Since the first edition of Rock Song Index was published, in 1997, librarians have found it to be a valuable and entertaining resource. The work of music journalist Pollock, a former editor of Gale's Popular Music Index and a producer at Sony/BMG Music Entertainment, the index is primarily a tool for looking up basic histories of "necessary and crucial" songs.
Approximately 400 new songs were added, and an equal number were dropped. Songs are now arranged by title rather than by performer, and each entry includes artist, year, songwriter, album, label, and producer. Part rock-and-roll history and part music trivia, the brief comments that accompany some entries provide tidbits of information about the musician or group and also give insight into Pollock's extensive knowledge of the history of rock. The "Title Index" forms the core of the text and is meant to be used "to find out, once and for all, who sang, wrote, or covered a given song, when and in what album it first appeared," and, in some cases, the reason behind its inclusion here. The "Title Index" is followed by two helpful new indexes, one by artist and one by year.
Though it lacks reviews or critical analyses, Pollock's work is valuable for its inclusion of some of the genre's most important songs, backed by a bibliography of selected sources that introduce the reader to some of the most authoritative reference works, monographs, Web sites, and magazines by and for the music industry. Complementing Billboard's American Rock 'n' Roll in Review (Schirmer Books, 1997) and The Rock and Roll Reader's Guide (Billboard Books, 1997), this would be a handy reference source for anyone interested in rock music history and is ideally suited for college, public, and high-school libraries. Libraries in which the first edition was well used will certainly want to update. Diana Kirby
