From the Publisher
A professor of German at the University of Minnesota who’s written many books on the influence of fairy tales, Zipes has long been a critic of "platform story-telling," which generally involves a performer, on a stage, entertaining spell-bound children. Essentially this calls to mind the whole Disney experience, of kids being wowed by a spectacle they whole-heartedly embrace. What Zipes wants instead is a storytelling process in which students take control, creating and performing new tales while revisiting and revising the old ones. The idea is for children to grasp the transformative power—as opposed to the entertainment value—of the craft.

For several years, Zipes has put this philosophy into practice with his Neighborhood Bridges program, now practiced in roughly 10 Minneapolis schools. Both teachers and specialists use a variety of techniques, he writes, to "animate and enable children to become better storytellers of their own lives." The students, for instance, create countertales to traditional stories such as "Hansel and Gretel" and "Little Red Riding Hood." With the latter, kids might consider themes of child abuse and abandonment. They also use fables about animals to create peace tales, myths to explore heroism, and tall tales to examine the adventures of ordinary people.

All of this is deeply engaging, though at times, Zipes’ own ideology threatens to undermine his efforts. Social activist that he is, he sometimes seems less interested in having kids create their own tales than in spinning out metaphors for reform. Still the value of Zipes’ enterprise is undeniable: In a time of near-relentless test prep, getting children to use stories and imagination to look closely at their world seems as refreshing as it does revolutionary.

About the Author
Jack Zipes has published and translated over a dozen volumes on and about stories, fairy tales, and storytelling. Cofounder of the Neighborhood Bridges Project, he is one of the most widely respected scholars of fairy tales and a passionate advocate for storytelling in education. He is Professor of German at the University of Minnesota.

Stories for Teaching

Zipes' book provides a good introduction to various genres of storytelling. What is especially interesting about this book is that he provides a description of a program in which he uses storytelling as a way of teaching within Minneapolis schools. It's a fine documentation of a creative and innovative project which could be used in other educational settings. The book offers practical resources by providing texts to various stories and numerous activities for integrating storytelling into lessons on language arts and drama. These activities can be used in a range of classrooms, and they can be adapted for use in numerous settings. The book has a fine bibliography of resources for finding numerous stories for use in schools, and a good bibliography on relevant scholarship. Of particular interest is his discussion of wider implications of using this type of teaching in an educational climate that stresses standardized testing over creative teaching, and some of the ideas could be useful to counteract these stiffling trends in education. One limitation with this book, however, is its limited treatment of ways to integrate storytelling into curricula as educators will need to be convinced that this type of teaching is relevant and useful to their current situations.

When Sex Became Gender is a study of post-World War II feminist theory from the viewpoint of intellectual history. When Sex Became Gender -- Crucial Reading

Overall, a really interesting read on an often ignored subject -- the time period between the designated "first" and "second" waves. Her research on the lives and historical works of these feminist figures shows excellent academic research, yet the language of the book also proves accessible to a broad audience. Her meticulous attention to the details of these five women's activist biographies and works shows that some of the same political issues which continue to influence twenty-first century feminists -- including motherhood, the social constructions of sex roles and gender, education, and historical reasons for women's oppression-- were just as prominent in the minds of earlier female scholars.

Reviewers and Producers of Quantitative Research Need to Have this Book on Their Bookshelf

This is a tremendously helpful book for reviewers (and producers) of quantitative research in the social sciences. The strengths of this book include the authors and the content, but perhaps more importantly, the book's format. Each chapter concerns a particular methodology or topic, authored by experts in their respective fields. Written in brief, digestible segments, each chapter presents the "state of the art" in a particular statistical methodology or concept (e.g., Osbourne's chapter on correlations describes why Spearman's rank correlation is no longer needed, and the importance of checking for outliers and fringeliers). Yet, the incredibly user-friendly format of each chapter makes this content all the more accessible and useful. Chapters begin with a brief description of the topic, followed by a table listing the key criteria used to evaluate whether the particular statistical technique or concept was applied reasonably. Then, a brief but clear discussion of each criterion is presented. The modular nature of the book, and the chapters themselves, allow reviewers to quickly find needed information regarding techniques, assumptions, and potential confounds. This book cannot take the place of formal training in a particular statistical technique, but for those of us who, years ago, took classes in techniques we have not subsequently used very often, this book is an invaluable reminder of what criteria to attend to, and a good update regarding current thinking in the field. While I think this book is essential for reviewers of research, it would behoove producers of research to use this book as well when they determine what information needs to be included in their manuscripts to clearly convey the adequacy of their methodology.

Every social sciences researcher should own a copy.

I absolutely love this book. As both a producer and reviewer of research in psychology, I have found this book to be invaluable in my work. As the authors indicated in the preface, it's nearly impossible for applied researchers to maintain a high level of expertise and familiarity with *all* of the sophisticated quantitative methods currently in use. For me, this book has served three very important purposes. As a peer reviewer, it has allowed me to comment in a more sophisticated way on methods that I have less familiarity with. The chapters also serve as a great starting point for learning about new methods. Finally, the various chapters are very useful in determining what, as a researcher, you should be thinking about when using these methods. I'd give this book 6 stars if I could. I hope there will be many future editions of this incredible book!

Very useful
By I Teach Typing
I read and write a lot of papers in bio-statistics and I grabbed this to provide some extra notes when I evaluate papers using methods that I do not typically use. I have read chapters covering methods that I use often, occasionally and things I have never touched and this book does an impressive job covering all of them. I was not expecting survival analyses (something I do every week) in a book slanted toward the social sciences and the coverage is excellent. Other areas that I work on periodically, like inter-rater reliability and agreement, were covered in adequate depth and I was reminded of the things that I need to pay attention to when reading. Finally topics that I never work on, like latent transition analysis, were nicely written and served as a primer and gave good references for me to learn new topics. The checklists covering what you need to look at in new papers are useful and the explanations of the points are generally great. The chapters are surprisingly well cross referenced but in a few places you need to have read a separate chapter in order to appreciate the advice in a second.

This book is great for a broad audience. For students, the page long descriptions of statistical methods and why you would want to bother with them are all excellent. I highly recommend this book for reviewers and also authors trying to figure out what manuscript reviewers will be looking for.

Edward Taylor is Associate Professor in the area of Leadership and Policy Studies and was recently appointed Dean of Undergraduate Education at the University of Washington.

David Gillborn is Professor of Education at the Institute of Education, University of London, and editor of the international journal Race Ethnicity and Education.

Gloria Ladson-Billings is the Kellner Family Chair of Urban Education and Professor of Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Policy Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Exploring Foundations of Critical Race Theory in Education: A Book Review

Foundations of Critical Race Theory in Education offers the reader a glimpse into the growing body of scholarly work that addresses the issues surrounding race in the realm of education. Drawing from its roots out of the legal system critical race theory (CRT) details the notion that there are systemic inequities that exist within the traditional institutions of power and influence. Furthermore, CRT employs the use of personal and communal narratives which offer the critical inquirer a tool for deconstructing and dismantling dominant discourses and ideologies. The authors of this anthology use CRT as a lens to examine the causes and effects of power and privilege within the context of mass schooling.
Divided into eight sections, each addressing a different topic, this volume contains seminal essays from some of the leading figures of the CRT movement. The introductory chapters set the stage with an introduction, history, and rationale for the employment of critical race theory analysis in education. Included in this section is Gloria Ladson -Billings' essay which asserts the notion that the "official school curriculum is designed to maintain a White supremacist master script" (p.29). She goes on to illustrate this idea by making connections to instruction, assessment , school funding, and desegregation.
Race is not the only topic discussed in the book; in section six, issues of gender, class, and culture are examined. Crenshaw's essay explores the concept of Intersectionality and the implications it holds for women of color in particular. She suggests that "intersectionality might be more broadly useful as a way of mediating the tension between assertions of multiple identity and the ongoing necessity of group politics" (p.243). This is a very practical point because it offers young women of color a way to navigate through a system that socially constructs both their race and gender.
The last section of the book allows for those with critiques of CRT to voice their objections to its use within the educational system. For example, Litowitz's essay outlines five flaws that he feels make CRT an inappropriate and inadequate analytical methodology.
Foundations of Critical Race Theory in Education readers should gain insight into the burgeoning field of critical race theory and its implications for education. It provides an excellent foundation and offers an avenue for critical inquiry and reflection.

Hooks's essays on film are not film criticism: they are criticism of culture as viewed through the prism of film. This mix of theory, reality, popular art and popular criticism (reviews and public reaction play a large part in her discussions) is effective in forcing a rethinking of the films in question. A reading of reviews of Exotica shows that only the strip-joint portions of the movie were considered worthy of commentary. Quentin Tarantino?a filmmaker "not afraid to publicly pimp his wares"?is taken to task for ingesting superficial aspects of black culture and spitting out the rest. The "mock feminism" of Waiting to Exhale ("an utterly boring show") is exposed as hooks examines differences between the book and the movie. The essays that do not focus on a single film are equally successful: a discussion of the black female gaze recalls that slaves could be punished for looking, and another on representations of black masculinity notes that in movies with two male leads, one black and one white, such as Rising Sun, the white man plays the "father" role. The essays could have benefited from more thoughtful organization. Hooks refers to her first-ever film-related essay, on Spike Lee's She's Gotta Have It, in her introduction and elsewhere, but the essay does not appear until the final pages of the book. A piece on the accountability of filmmakers that involves Wayne Wang would have matched up nicely with a dialogue with Wang, which instead is sandwiched in a group of interviews with Arthur Jaffa, Camille Billops and the like.

An excellent book that really gives you something to think about as she examines race, sex and class in America through the movies. I really enjoyed reading her feminist views, and her interviews with filmmakers Charles Burnett, Camille Billops, and AJ (Arthur Jafa).

Clear, well written History of the Genre

I found this book to be a well-written, clear explanation of the history of installation art from as early as the surrealists to the date it was published. Some of the images are too small to get a better feel for the installations they are depicting, but the descriptions of these installations are usually detailed enough for a good idea. This book along with "From Margin to Center" pretty well covers the subject up through 2004. Something needs to be written to capture the amazing works that have been happening since then. I'm waiting for that to happen.

While not comprehensive by any means, this book is a great starting point for developing a vocabulary to distinguish various strategies employed by installation artists.
