Enlightening Perspective on EFs

George McCloskey's text presents the most clearly written and expertly integrated view of executive functions and how they impact student performance. His explanation of the arenas and domains for executive function involvement, as well as the varied nature of the numerous functions (such as modulate, initiate, etc.), allows the reader to fully comprehend this view of neuropsychological functioning. In addition, he presents case studies which are extremely helpful for envisioning the variety of ways that executive functions can impact student behavior and performance. This is a must-have for school psychologists who want to be up to date on EF assessment and intervention!

The current state of the art!

The authors have been able to pack years of research on EF into this book. McCloskey's developmental theory of executive functioning is presented with several opportunites, including vignettes and a CD (including sample reports) to apply the information. The book is laid out in three parts: Conceptual Overview; Assessment and Interventions, and; Contextual Applications. The 8 chapters within these parts go from explaining how Executive Function difficulties affect Children, Executive Function Development and Related Issues, Interventions for Executive Function Difficulties to Executive Functioning in the school setting. Besides the sample psychoeducational reports, the CD provides hand-outs on EF, interview and observational forms which can be used in structuring the report and intervention strategies.
This book is not light reading for a quiet evening in that there is little (if any) fluff on these pages. However, the authors present an incredibly complex construct, Executive Functioning, in a manner that unfolds and will bring the reader up to date on the state of the art of this usually overlooked variable in the classroom.
