About the Author

James DeFilippis is an Assistant Professor in the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy. He received his PhD in Geography from Rutgers University in 2000, and his BA in Political Science and Geography from the University of Vermont in 1993. He is the author of Unmaking Goliath: Community Control in the Face of Global Capital (Routledge Press, 2004), which was named the "Best Book In Urban Politics, 2004" by the American Political Science Association. He has also published many articles and reports on housing, community development, urban politics, and local economic development.

Susan Saegert is Director of the Center for Human Environments (CHE) and Professor of Environmental Psychology at the CUNY Graduate Center, where she was also the first director of the Center for the Study of Women and Society. She received her PhD in Social Psychology from the University of Michigan in 1973 and her B.A. with honors in government from the University of Texas in 1968. Dr. Saegert has published five books including Social capital in poor communities with Phil Thompson and Mark Warren (Russell Sage, 2001), and From abandonment to hope: community households in Harlem , with Jackie Leavitt (Columbia University Press, 1990). She has also published over fifty articles and book chapters on environmental psychology, women and the environment, crowding, environmental stress, and housing and health, as well as social capital.

Sweeping and comprehensive

A must read for students and teachers in the field of community development. The anthology is an extremelly well edited and comprehensive compilation of articles. They are not only useful, but timely and vital to anyone interested in the problems and solutions of the urban community.

I may becoming a Platonist...

I've always had trouble with the idea that mathematicians discover things, as opposed to inventing them. You see, if you discover something, the implication is that that something is, in some sense, out there. But where would mathematical entities reside, if not inside human brains and thought processes? I must say, reading this book has if not changed my mind at least made me seriously question my positions - which is really what you want from any good book. Brown's treatment is relatively accessible, but of course you will be in for a good amount of philosophy, and some not so easily digestible math. Still, the attentive reader can get the gist of the arguments without having to follow every proof presented by the author. I am a little less convinced, though still intrigued, by Brown's claim that pictures can - in some circumstances - do the work of formal proofs. Then again, that notion does appeal to my generally pluralistic attitude about methods of inquiry, and it does fit very well with the author's overall contention that mathematics is - surprisingly - a lot more like the natural sciences than one might think at first. Of course, all of this leaves completely unanswered the underlying question of the ontological status of mathematical objects. Oh well, can't get everything out of a single book.

Intermediate value theorem

I didn't read this book, but I'd like to share with the other customers the "review" by Thomas William Körner, a mathematician from Cambridge University (winner of the Salem Prize 1972) that I appreciate so much for his vastly erudite, instructive, and entertaining books on mathematics. In chapter 1 of his "A Companion to Analysis," Professor Körner states: "A good example of this [that people are easily fooled by intuition and ignorance of mathematics] is given in the book [9] [J. R. Brown, "Philosophy of Mathematics]. The author cannot understand the problems involved in proving results like the intermediate value theorem and has written his book to share his lack of understanding with a wider audience."

Arranged alphabetically, each entry includes a helpful bibliography. The diverse range of topics (Boxing journalism, Chinese American press, Obituaries, Weekly Reader, to name a few) makes it a particularly useful reference source. The work omits or provides little coverage on some important topics, for example, biographies of the prolific media critic Howard Kurtz and muckraking journalist I. F. Stone; the history of journalism education; and media watchdog organizations. There are only a few entries on the burgeoning Hispanic media, which serves the largest minority group in America. Since the huge topic of American journalism has been compressed into a single volume instead of a multivolume work, it is inevitable that many topics might be omitted. A few entries are marred by a lack of balance. In terms of book design, the work would have been enhanced with illustrations or black-and-white photographs. Despite these problems, this volume serves as a good reference source for both large public and academic libraries. --Donald Altschiller

Stephen L. Vaughn has taught the history of journalism and mass communication at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, since 1981. He has been a past Vilas Associated Scholar at Wisconsin and is the recipient of two Fulbright awards. He is the author of several books and numerous scholarly articles.

"The Quarrel of the Rose" is the name given by modern scholars to the collection of these and other documents, including both poetry and letters, that offer a vivid account of this important controversy.

PUNGENT ESSAYS BY A PROMINENT BLACK PHILOSOPHER

The author states in the Preface and Acknowledgements to this 2006 book, "Most of the essays here were written during the 1990s, when there was frequent talk of a need for a national conversation about race. But I have not intended these essays to help satisfy some such need. Americans, after all have never NOT conversed about race. And their public cultures have rarely wanted for talk, debate, and politically inflected representations of race. What matters, we know, is how we interpret race---whether, indeed, it is possible to establish the terms of a discourse about race that is consonant both with the demands of a democratic political culture and with an acknowledgement of the specific history and legacies of white supremacy in the United States. Upon rereading these essays, it seems to me that this is the question that connects them, and that motivates both their criticism of some typical attempts to say what blacks are good (or bad) for and their articulation of (I hope) some democratically useful interpretations of black identity and politics."

An uniquely intelligent analysis of TV and American culture

"Genre and Television" by Jason Mittell is a scholarly but accessable study of television and American culture. Mr. Mittel demonstrates how genres function as cultural categories by stressing the interplay of historical processes, industrial practices, audience discources, text, genre mixing and parody. Interestingly, Mr. Mittel draws on the work of Michel Foucault to discuss how genres are crucial in developing and maintaining audience discourses where definitions, interpretations and evaluations may be challenged and revised over time. Mr. Mittell's mix of interesting and entertaining case studies combined with sophisticated analyses makes for fascinating reading and will no doubt prove to be a highly influential work within the media studies field.

Mr. Mittell presents a historiography of the quiz show to demonstrate how public policy decisions can shape genres. The radio origins of the quiz show provided a model of how the genre would be presented on television in the mid-1950s, with expectations of monetary awards, honest competition, a question and answer format, educational content and positive social value. As the reality of lotteries and scripting were discovered, the FCC strong-armed the industry into producing shows that conformed to what it perceived to be the mass audience' preferences and expectations.

Cartoons are discussed to illustrate the lasting impact that industrial practices can exert on genres. We learn how cartoons produced by Hollywood film studios for general theater audiences were re-broadcast on television for consumption by children in the Saturday morning timeslot. The short-lived success of Hanna-Barbera's primetime productions such as the 1960s series "The Flintstones" reinforced a growing consensus that cartoons could not be successfully targeted to adults, a view that persisted for decades. However, the author heaps generous praise on Cartoon Network and the cable industry with reinvigorating the genre by successfully cultivating a mass audience of cartoon lovers through the use of shrewd branding characterized by irony, nostalgia and art.

The oft-maligned talk show genre was the subject of a survey conducted by the author that attempted to elicit how audience discourses of taste and identity are shaped beyond the viewing experience. Although the survey sample was much too small to be validated scientifically, the answers to the open-ended questions confirmed the author's contention that the "cultural circulation" of genres is important, as viewers and non-viewers frequently reported that they evaluate talk show genres and sub-genres in discussions held with others away from the television set.

The importance of reading texts in their historical and social context is illustrated by the 1950s classic "Dragnet", whose suggested authenticity combined with innovative production techniques heavily influenced the police show genre. However, the dualistic worldview of "Dragnet" was disastrously revived in 1967 to changing cultural values that reduced the ideologically-rigid program to self-parody. The author explains how the more successful precedents that were filmed in the 1970s such as "Starsky & Hutch" recalled some of the production values of "Dragnet" but increasingly celebrated the "rogue hero" who could navigate the ambiguous moral ground that might exist between the extremes of criminal chaos and a repressive state bureaucracy.

Mr. Mittell contends that genre mixing and parody are often employed to heighten cultural assumptions about genre. Parodies such as the 1970s TV series "Soap" successfully mixed daytime dramas with comedy but confounded audience expectations about each of these genres, which explains why the program was so contentious at the time. Likewise, "The Simpsons'" blending of cartoon comedy with family sitcom has stirred controversy over the appropriateness of adult-oriented content in a format that has been traditionally associated with young children.

About the Author
Philip Furia is one of the best-known writers on popular music, having authored critical biographies of Johnny Mercer (2003), Irving Berlin (1998), and Ira Gershwin (1995), and the award-winning book Poets of Tin Pan Alley (1992). He teaches at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Michael Lasser is host of National Public Radio's "Fascinatin' Rhythm," a weekly program that focuses on the great American popular songs. It has been on the air since 1980, and was awarded a Peabody Award in 1995.

Lots of fun info but some annoying errors

There was a lot of great info in this book, especially covering songs from the first half of the 20th century. But there were also some annoying errors and omissions. Among the errors: a photo of the original star of Cabaret (Jill Haworth) is labeled as Jan Clayton (who was the original star of Carousel several decades earlier). The authors write that Comden and Green only had three standards, and yet they include four in this book (New York New York, The Party's Over, Just in Time and Make Someone Happy). There are some odd choices, such as "It's Not Where You Start" (from Seesaw) that is not remotely a standard, but they omit "If He Walked Into My Life" (from Mame) and "The Way We Were." And much as we all love the musical Chicago, I don't think it merits a page-and-a-half (I'm not even sure "All That Jazz" qualifies as a standard) but there's no coverage of "Tomorrow" (from Annie) or "What I Did For Love" (A Chorus Line). The authors probably would have been smarter to just stop coverage in the 1950s or 1960s.

A delightful journey in melodic nostalgia. Philip Furia and Michael Lasser use their long experience with American popular music to tell us with insight and humor how more than 600 songs dating from 1910 to 1977 came to be written, how they were received, how they touched American culture. The surprise for the reader is the discovery of how many of the songs linger in one's memory, how many of the words one can recall, how many of the tunes one can still sing. Then the message of the place of the songs in American life comes home, how much they say about the way we lived.

Not a book to be read from cover to cover but rather one to be browsed for favorite parts, one to be returned to time and again.

Murray Forman is Assistant Professor of Communication Studies at Northeastern University. He is author of The 'Hood Comes First: Race, Space, and Place in Hip-Hop.

Mark Anthony Neal is Associate Professor of Black Popular Culture in the Program in African and African-American Studies at Duke University. Neal is the author of What the Music Said, Soul Babies, and Songs in the Key of Black Life, all published by Routledge.
