Eddie S. Meadows is Professor Emeritus of Ethnomusicology and Jazz Studies and former Graduate Advisor of the School of Music and Dance at San Diego State University (SDSU). About the Author
Arthur Bernstein is an American expatriate who lives near Liverpool. He teaches songwriting, guitar and music business classes at the Liverpool Institute of the Arts(UK).
Naoki Sekine has a music business degree from New York University, and has translated several music business books into Japanese. He is the liason for Sony/Japan to seventeen Asian countries, including Indian, China, Singapore, Malaysia, and Korea. He recently wrote a forty page research paper on the Asian music business for UNESCO.
Dick Weissman is the most published American author on the music business. He has written four books about the music industry. He taught for twelve years in the Music & Entertainment Industry program at the University of Colorado at Denver, was VP for the Music & Entertainment Industry Educators Association, and has a long-term career as a studio musician, recording artist, songwriter and record producer. His book The Music Industry; Career Opportunities, Self Defense, is currently in its 4th edition. He will be the general editor for the new Routledge series on The Music Business in the 21st Century..

a model for other Kindle editions

Not only is this an extremely interesting, readable account of textual strategies in video games (and associated media), but it's a model Kindle edition. The footnotes are hyperlinked and many of the cited web-pages in the notes can also be accessed directly from the Kindle. Even the index is hyperlinked. In the index, the original page numbers are retained but linked to the right locations in the Kindle edition. Somebody put a lot of attention into this and it makes this the most usable Kindle edition I have.

read it with a grain of salt

This book is skewed heavily toward a radical feminist perspective. I guess by that I mean that the author always seems ready to interpret a film as being hostile toward women. I consider myself a feminist, and heaven knows I am no apologist for Hitchcock in his attitude toward, and treatment of, women; but I also refuse to hate or blame men for every ill in the female cosmos. While one could make the case that Hollywood has institutionalized misogyny, and that the strong female roles of the 40s have been replaced to a large extent by roles as prostitutes and crime victims, sometimes the specific conclusions Ms. Modleski reaches are just plain loopy. Other times I think she adds great insight to her observations about the films of one the most talented directors ever.

You just have to read the book knowing that the author does have a strong viewpoint and may not always present a balanced perspective.

The author examines seven films: Blackmail, Murder!, Rebecca, Notorious, Rear Window, Vertigo and Frenzy.

This is a book worth reading, particularly if you are a film (or especially Hitchcock) fan. But you should be aware that this author has an agenda to put forward, and sometimes she doesn't let common sense, or the facts, get in her way. This kind of a book can be very rewarding, but you have to put more effort into the reading of it -- not just reading what the author says, but trying to understand why the author says it. In this sense it is also a good introduction to feminist film theory.

Hitchcock fans receive critical insights on seven important films, each of which serves as a foundation for an analysis of spectators of both sexes. This updated second edition includes a new chapter surveying the last 15 years of Hitchcock and adds further food for thought.

Great Primer for considering the place of women in film

This book was assigned reading for a Hitchcock class at NYU. I thoroughly enjoyed its even-handed approach to pondering the great film auteur's perspective on women as expressed in his films and the place of women in American films in general.
Although I might disagree with about 5-10% of her conclusions, I would still highly recommend this study.

Erudite, Informative, Well Written.

Professor Garton has undertaken an important, challenging task and has succeeded wonderfully. His work informs academicians and literate others on the moments in history upon which understanding sexualities turn. From ancient history (Greek and Roman) to the near present, he explains how humanity has understood and misunderstood "sexual identities" as distinct from sexual behavior and gender. He demonstrates sexual identity is a much more nuanced and infinitely more varied phenomenon than what can be gleaned from incremental understandings of anatomy, gender, and sexual behavior.

His excellent treatment is not without at least one serious omission, however. In recent years much progress has been made in arguing persuasively of the sociobiological and evolutionary factors affecting sexuality and, per force, identities associated therewith. Among key works laying out arguments of evolutionary factors contributing to sexual identities are: Donald Symons (The Evolution of Human Sexuality), David Buss (The Evolution of Desire), and Helen Fisher (Anatomy of Love). Professor Garton's fine contribution would be even more enlightening were it to include material found in these sources.

I didn't really care for this book by Stephen Garton. I have a hard time trusting the ravings of a reptilian overlord who at any moment could consume my flesh with the slightest of ease. I feel his arguments were completely biased and based too much on his own experience of reptilian behaviour.

Great critique of the way racial and socioeconomic disparities allocate privilege and oppression to construct the public school as the conduit between civil society and the prison industrial complex. Builds on Charles Mills critique of the "racial contract." Great starting point for developing a realistic perspective on the social dynamics underlying public education. This perspective can be applied to policy in multiple ways at the readers discretion.

A variety of individuals offer their perspective on different aspects of re-engaging the audience in the creative artistic experience. It becomes increasingly clear that art's managers are as much a part of the problem as they are of adopting some of the potential improvements that could and should be made. In short, if the creative experience is not a reciprocal one in which the viewer, attendee or reader has a role, true engagement is problematic.
