Very well thought-out and well written. Very provocative in an original way.

I read this book a half a year ago, and while I was not used to the ideas in the book at first, it quickly revealed itself as a very well-written and thought-out book. You can't start reading this book with preconceptions because Webb thinks differently from all the major thinkers now. It seems like a thing of the past to write meta-histories of abstract facets of the human experience, but Webb does this skillfully and convincingly.
In his book, Webb describes four self-understandings in the course of history that cut across cultures: atomism, perfectionism, demoticism, and virtuocracy. Atomism is the self-understanding taken up by the Sophists of ancient Greece, the Legalists of ancient China, and yes, modern Liberalism in the broad sense. Perfectionism maps onto mystics across cultures and through history. Demoticism maps onto the peasants and community-centered citizens. Hobbits would be demots. Virtuocracy maps onto the clergy and other spiritual elites. For most of history, Virtuocratic, Demotic, and Perfectionist self-understandings have reigned. Since the late 1800s, however, Atomism has gradually become the most popular and powerful self-understanding. How has Atomism achieved this primary status? How has the world changed because of this? What are viable alternatives to an atomist "End of history?" Read Webb's book to find out.

One cannot pigeon-hole Webb into any political category. He is neither a liberal nor a conservative. For liberals (in the broad sense) out there, read this book to see what an intelligent response to liberalism looks like, instead of dismissing all anti-liberals or anti-modernists as backward and stupid. For conservatives, read this book to find out how conservatism has been hijacked by the atomist agenda, and how conservatism is really a shadow of what it's meant to be.

This is one of the most powerful and persuasive critiques of liberal modernity to have appeared in recent years. Webb is an unusually intelligent and perceptive thinker and this fine book should be widely read with considerable interest even by those who, like this reviewer, are not so down on the modern, capitalist, and liberal-democratic world.

The Truth May Be Stranger Than Fiction

This is a great book for anyone interested in learning more about the Tunnels under New York City. Solis gives interesting accounts of the history behind each kind of tunnel and her own experiences exploring them. She warns that while popular fiction on this topic may be overly romanticized, she sticks solely with the FACTS. However, even thought I am a BIG fan of one such fictional account of the people living below New York City, the '80s TV series "Beauty & the Beast," I was still very much intrigued and amazed by her "real life" stories. Great pictures of the Tunnels found throughout the book as well.

Still Plenty to Explore

Having ordered this book from Amazon, I did not clue in that it was a large format, paperback, glossy book. I had expected the typical nonfiction book print treatment. This is not a negative just a heads up - it does lend itself to the photographs, maps and plans provided. It is an extremely interesting subterranean history but I would recommend it only for those who are fascinated with New York and/or tunnels and below ground architecture. The author's love of the subject and associated explorations shines throughout the book and that enthusiasm is passed to the reader.

I am a huge fan of the history of New York and this took my interest in a new direction...down. Solis takes us on journeys through the subway and train systems, underground passageways and the immense and sometime interlocking building foundations. The amazing stories that she "digs up" along the way hold interest and the accompanying photographs do not rob one's imagings of what it is like underground New York - they enhance the whole experience. It is also a history of the growth of New York and how strains on fresh water, transportation, electricity, and communications drove the need to tunnel and burrow. As well, it ably proves that 'progress is mostly the product of rogues' by telling the stories of the rich and the entrepreneurial who headed many of the large capital projects underground.

The opulence of some of the now abandoned or destroyed work is awesome. This includes City Hall Station closed since 1945, McAdoo station's vaulted ceilings, the incredible Pennsylvania Station (sad that it is gone), and Grand Central. The Chapter, The Lost Tunnel of Atlantic Avenue, reads like an Indiana Jones movie. Because of reading the book, I may now have to book a private dinner in the restaurant Philip Marie which has a long buried living room beyond its basement which must have resulted when Manhattan was leveled for planned urban development. A very interesting contribution to the incredible history of New York and an area where much more is waiting to be discovered.

Excellent book if you are looking for the real stories behind (or below) the streets of NY. Nicely written. Sticks to the facts and the author's impressions of the scenes did not affect the character of the book. The photographs are amazing! If you want a good introduction into the NY underground this is the place to start.

If you have the time...

Not by any means an introduction to the field of visual studies, however it is true to its title in that it indeed is skeptical. If you do not have a previous knowledge of visual studies, this book will not provide much clarification. The text comes across as a curriculum guide for educators. Elkins is proficient at pointing out the flaws of the discipline, and I'd agree that it is "too easy." Elkins provides many great examples of images from science to dogtags that could be de-coded under the rubric of visual studies. However, after providing these examples, he does not actually go through any interpretative process. Perhaps he is leaving this task for the reader to do..? Knowing how intelligent Elkins is, I would have loved to read his interpretations of the examples he provides. Elkins also provides a good precis of the canonical literature.

This is not a ground-breaking book, but if you are involved in any way with this field of knowledge, I'd definately suggest it. Otherwise, seek elsewhere for a more thorough introduction.

I was initially interested in the newly emerging field of visual studies, however after reading several of elkins' other books as well as taking a course taught by the author, I have lost what interest I had. This book follows similar themes as his others and while it does a fantastic job of presenting problems within the field, it does not present any feasible alternatives.

Concerning the images included, it is problematic that elkins does not then interpret at least some of the images. However, I do not believe that elkins is leaving this task for the reader to do. Having listened to his lectures I believe that elkins includes the images simply because they strike him in some way or another, not because they have any relevance to the field in question. This lack of relevance seems to pervade the majority of his literature and indeed the field as a whole.

Derek Kompare is Assistant Professor of Cinema-Television at Southern Methodist University. He has published several articles on television history and genre, including his work on Nick at Nite, The Osbournes, and the "television heritage" of the 1970s.

First book to treat TV repeats seriously

In this book, Derek Kompare uncovers the hidden two-thirds of commercial television -- the television repeat. With all of the books published on TV in the last few decades, no scholar until now has ever stopped to notice that most American TV is made up of reruns. Kompare explores both the industry strategies that created the phenomenon and the social meanings of the continous recycling of old programs. He explores the explosion of repeats that accompanied the rise of cable, and the sense that TV now has a "heritage," a canonical history that is referenced with both love and irony. My advanced undergraduate course last year liked the book a lot, with one student commenting that Rerun Nation is "crucial" to understanding television and popular culture today.

Judith Aron Rubin, PhD, ATR-BC, is a licensed psychologist and faculty member of the University of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Psychoanalytic Center. She is a former president and honorary life member of the American Art Therapy Association, and she consults, lectures, and gives workshops across the country as well as abroad.

A good source book for studying the field of art therapy

A great source for learning more about the application of art therapy. As a graduate student, I found this book indespensible for learning about my field and writing my thesis. I would recommend this book to anyone interested practicing art therapy as a proffesion.

Too basic to be what "every art therapist needs to know"

This is a well-written book, but if you are an advanced professional or even a graduate student, just read it at the library. The well known author Rubin has again put together a book that is very basic and easily readable. But the total feeling of this book is rather flat. It also feels as if she is writing for a very young audience, perhaps high school age or young adults.

I imagined when I purchased this volume that I would be reading some detailed cases as the author is a graduate of many fine schools and trainings. But that experience does not come through and I do not think I can recommend this one to graduate students at university level.

verbose and repetitive

For some one who uses art as therapy, there are very few examples of it offered here. Mostly a dense offering of words repeated quite frequently. I'm several chapters in and don't think it's going to improve. A leader in the field, yes but not everyone can write books.
