This book conducts a post-colonial, gendered investigation of women-centred South Asian films. In these films, the narrative becomes an act of political engagement and a site of feminist struggle: a map that weaves together multiple strands of subjectivity―gender, caste, race, class, religion, and colonialism. The book explores the cinematic construction of an oppositional narrative of feminist dissent with a view to elaborate a historical understanding and theorisation of the ‘materiality and politics’ of the everyday struggle of Indian women. The book analyzes the ways that ‘cultural workers’ have tended to use subversive narratives as a tool of resistance. Narratives that are political, ideological, classed, raced and gendered offer the focus of this exploration. Through strategies of disclosure and documentation of memory, personal experiences, and imaginary events shaped by the larger historical, political, and cultural contexts, these discursive texts engage in the processes of struggle against a plethora of oppression: caste, class, religion, patriarchal, sexual, and (neo)colonial. The study looks at the manner in which, through their creative and aesthetic interventions, South Asian film makers enable the articulation of an alternative gendered subjectivity as well as constitute the ground for personal and collective empowerment. Films discussed include Shyam Benegal’s Nishaant, Nandita Das’ Firaaq, Beate Arnestad’s My Daughter the Terrorist, and Sarah Gavron’s Brick Lane.

About the Author

A. David Gordon retired from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 2002, where he taught mass media ethics and law as well as journalism and media/society courses.

John Michael Kittross is editor of Media Ethics magazine. He retired from Emerson College, where he served as provost and vice president for academic affairs. He is managing director of K\E\G Associates, an academic consulting group.

John C. Merrill is professor emeritus of journalism at the University of Missouri.

William A. Babcock is senior ethics professor at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale.

Michael Dorsher teaches mass media ethics at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

About the Author

Philip Auslander teaches performance studies at the Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of Georgia. His research interests include performance theory, performance and technology, and popular music. He is the author of six books, including Liveness: Performance in a Mediatized Culture and Performing Glam Rock: Gender and Theatricality in Popular Music.

"When William E. Deal casually flipped through Theory for Performance Studies: A Student's Guide, published this year by Routledge, he noticed a few familiar sentences. After taking a closer look, Mr. Deal, a professor of religious studies at Case Western Reserve University, discovered whole paragraphs and even entire pages that had been lifted directly from a book he co-wrote, Theory for Religious Studies, published by Routledge in 2004.

"My jaw dropped," he recalls. "My stomach turned flip-flops."

Mr. Deal and his co-author, Timothy K. Beal, a professor of religion at Case Western, estimated that roughly 80 percent of their book had been copied, word for word, without credit of any kind. Their names did not appear in the new book."

Eversley argues that the modern emergence of the interest in 'the real Negro' transforms the question of what race an author belongs into a question of what it takes to belong to that race. Consequently, Paul Laurence Dunbar's Negro dialect poems were prized in the first part of the century because - written by a black man - they were not 'imitation' black, while the dialect performances by Zora Neale Hurston were celebrated because, written by a 'real' black, they were not 'imitation' white. The second half of the century, in its dismissal of material segregation, sanctions a notion of black racial meaning as internal and psychological and thus promotes a version of black racial 'truth' as invisible and interior, yet fixed within a stable conception of difference. The Real Negro foregrounds how investments in black racial specificity illuminate the dynamic terms that define what makes a text and a person 'black', while it also reveals how 'blackness', spoken and authentic, guards a more fragile, because unspoken, commitment to the purity and primacy of 'whiteness' as a stable, uncontested ideal.

About the Author

Claudio Cepeda, M.D., is a child and adolescent psychiatrist in private practice and member of the Southwest Psychiatric Physicians, as well as Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio. His first book, The Psychiatric Interview of Children and Adolescents, has been translated to Japanese, Slovac and Spanish. He has broad clinical experience in inpatient, partial, hospital and outpatient preadolescent and adolescent psychiatric practice, and in teaching child and adolescent interviewing to general psychiatric residents and fellows in child and adolescent psychiatry.

Good Place to Start for a Challenging Childhood Condition

As a child psychologist, I work with kids with varying degrees of mental illness. Trying to diagnose a psychotic disorder can be tough, however, since it sometimes isn't clear if it is true psychosis, versus an exaggerated depressive or possttraumatic response. Especially in my work with foster and adopted children, emotional and behavior patterns vary, and sometimes the child's actions seem outright bizarre. This book acquaints the practitioner with the steps needed in order to confirm a short- or long-term psychotic reaction in a child. It doesn't devote as much as it should to differential diagnosis, but the clinician can find this information elsewhere.

A final section of the book consists of practical applications within specific settings (therapy, outreach, schools, psychiatric services) and prevention and training issues.

STEPHEN TURNBULL is the author of over 50 books on the military history of Europe and the Far East. He works as a Japanese cultural consultant and is Lecturer in Japanese Religion at the Department of East Asian Studies at Leeds University. He served as the historical advisor for the Universal Pictures film "47 Ronin", starring Keanu Reeves.

First off I'll admit...

I didn't read this book from cover to cover, but mainly dipped into the latter part, from which I learned about events such as the Mongol invasion of Java of which I was unaware, as well as learning more about the Mongol invasion of Japan than I had known before. I am not particularly a student of Genghis Khan and the Mongal conquests, but do feel reasonably well informed on events up to 1260. Thus the material concerning events after 1260 was what I was interested in, and I feel the book did a fine, informative job on that. So for me the book was excellent, and I give it 5 stars on that basis.

AN UNSTOPPABLE FORCE

I have always wondered when discussing the Mongol Empire if one should pluralize the word `empire.' The Mongol Empire was the largest land continuous empire the world had ever seen before or since. Genghis Kahn had two things Alexander the Great did not: a longer life, and successors to continue the conquest. I have long believed that had Alexander lived, however, his empire would have stabilized and lasted, instead of dissolving away leaving the world almost sooner then it came. The Mongol Empire fragments into many empires and kingdoms and despite their many organizational enhancements they were not every good at governing what they had conquered. In many ways, those who were the conquered had a stronger effect, culturally, on those who conquered them the Mongols had on those they had conquered.

Stephen Turnbull's work is a good look brief look into the juggernaut that was the Mongol Empire. He discusses some of the inaccuracies and misconceptions that are associated with the Mongol army. As I have stated in other reviews of this series, these books are very interesting because they are in an almost textbook format with out really having a textbook feel to them. In this book, there are maps, classical paintings of events, and art from various cultures that had to deal with the Mongol armies. One chapter even deals with horror ordinary people who were their victims had to experience.

"Throughout all the accounts of the Mongol conquests we can discern in the background an echo of great human suffering. Ordinary people from Poland to Java, who under any other circumstance might have lived lives that may have been short but were certainly uneventful, suddenly found their world turned upside down by a horde of demons apparently let loose from the depths of Hell." p.76

The Mongol Empire had fought peoples all the way from Europe into Japan, a great deal of their success was owed to organization and their ability to change and adapt. This book serves as a good little into the Empire and Army of the Golden Horde.

A good layman's introduction to Adlerian psychology

This book is an excellent layman's introduction to Adlerian psychology that is both well written and filled with real life illustrations. If you've studied Jung and/or Freud, you'll find this book a revelation of insights that cannot be had elsewhere. If you're a Jungian adherent and of the Introverted Attitude, you may find that this book triggers some of your complexes. When reading any book on psychology, remember that the nature of the founder of any school of psychology has a profound bearing on its teachings. Good reading!

As a counselor who most readily identifies with the Adlerian theory, this book is by FAR my favorite. Life can be very difficult and it takes courage and our job is to help people find their courage to keep moving through the things that scare us, that beat us down. We must instill a sense of courage to go out into the world and tell it to do it's worst because, even if we fall, all is not lost. Happiness is worth the courage.
