Money, power, and celebrity – the stuff of Hollywood is also substance of politics. While Hollywood celebrities such as Susan Sarandon, George Clooney, and Ed Begley Jr. currently attract attention from the media for their involvement in politics, Hollywood has been involved in politics since its earliest days.

Hollywood and Politics: A Sourcebook documents the entertainment industry’s participation in American politics on both the Left and the Right. From the 1920s through today, this volume provides scholars of history, politics, and film with the controversial history of Hollywood’s involvement in American politics. Through twenty-four chapters that begin with Upton Sinclair and take us all the way to the satire of South Park, readers are guided through elections, trials, speeches, and memorandums, many of which have never before been published, providing rare insight into the history of Hollywood activism.

From World War II to Iraq, and from Walt Disney to Charlton Heston, Hollywood and Politics lays a historical foundation for anyone interested in how celebrities helped shape our country’s policies and culture.

Review

"Well-chosen primary sources abound in Hollywood and Politics: A Sourcebook, and I eagerly read document after document. Critchlow and Raymond provide valuable introductions, putting each one into context, then wisely step back and let the original material speak for itself."

―Valerie Yaros, Screen Actors Guild Historian

"A much needed volume of primary source readings on the politics of Hollywood and American filmmaking.  Ranging from the Depression of the 1930s through the culture wars of the recent past, the book offers a balanced, wide-ranging array of materials that speak to how the movies―and the people that made them―have confronted and interpreted a variety of political issues.  Thought provoking and engaging."

―Steven Watts, author of The Magic Kingdom: Walt Disney and the American Way of Life and Mr. Playboy: Hugh Hefner and the American Dream

Review
"After these books are published, there will be no need for anyone else to write a how-to-understand-Deleuze book. The clarity of the prose, the careful explanation of each difficult and important concept, and the lack of any jargon whatsoever make this the definitive commentary on Deleuze."
-Dorothea Olkowski, University of Colorado

Sexy Intelligentsia
By Jeremy Glazier
Deleuze's work is complex and often difficult, especially for the reader who comes with an interest in art, music, and literature but little familiarity with (or perhaps tolerance for) late-twentieth century philosophy.
In this study of Deleuze's writing on music and painting, Ronald Bogue distills the essence of the philosopher's decades-long interest in these disciplines. This is no "Deleuze for Dummies"--some familiarity with Deleuzian concepts is assumed and expected. As with similar texts (Harari's _How James Joyce Made His Name: A Reading of the Final Lacan_, for example, or Rochlitz's _The Disenchantment of Art: The Philosophy of Walter Benjamin_), _Deleuze on Music, Painting, and the Arts_ tells us probably as much about Bogue as it does about Deleuze.
This is useful, however, because Bogue has read widely and with comprehension not only in Deleuze but in the whole network of related subject matter touching on his concerns--Jacob von Uexkull, Susan Oyama, Paul Griffiths and Alois Riegl among others. Additionally, Bogue's consideration of Modern music is exemplary for its clear-sighted and vivid engagement with difficult (what Adorno might even call radical) music. Take as an example this brief segment from the discussion of Messiaen's spectacular _Catalogue d'oiseaux_: "...Messiaen never approaches an individual bird's song in isolation, but instead juxtaposes it with the songs of other species and situates it within an evocative sonic landscape....Such pictorialism might suggest that Messiaen's aesthetic is purely mimetic, but the actual results of his practice belie this suspicion." He goes on to discuss the piece's motivic development and the composer's modal style.
Deleuze is at his most brilliant in the writings on Messiaen and Francis Bacon, and Bogue's book allows easier access for readers without the necessary time or desire to wade through thousands of pages to find what they're looking for. Of course, the ideas about music and painting are inextricable from the other ideas in those pages (there are, after all, 'a thousand plateaus', and it is not impossible that the reader may feel the need to explore further to obtain a more complete understanding--which is, after all, not such a bad thing....)
At the beginning of the twenty-first century we could do worse than immerse ourselves in a study of Deleuze. For the student of music and art, as well as for those interested in expanding their knowledge of one of the great thinkers of that long, dark, and now late century, this is a valuable book.

Epistemology and Science Education: Understanding the Evolution vs. Intelligent Design ControversyFrom Routledge

How is epistemology related to the issue of teaching science and evolution in the schools? Addressing a flashpoint issue in our schools today, this book explores core epistemological differences between proponents of intelligent design and evolutionary scientists, as well as the critical role of epistemological beliefs in learning science. Preeminent scholars in these areas report empirical research and/or make a theoretical contribution, with a particular emphasis on the controversy over whether intelligent design deserves to be considered a science alongside Darwinian evolution. This pioneering book coordinates and provides a complete picture of the intersections in the study of evolution, epistemology, and science education, in order to allow a deeper understanding of the intelligent design vs. evolution controversy.

This is a very timely book for teachers and policy makers who are wrestling with issues of how to teach biology and evolution within a cultural context in which intelligent design has been and is likely to remain a challenge for the foreseeable future.

The first textbook of its kind, Quantitative Corpus Linguistics with R demonstrates how to use the open source programming language R for corpus linguistic analyses. Computational and corpus linguists doing corpus work will find that R provides an enormous range of functions that currently require several programs to achieve – searching and processing corpora, arranging and outputting the results of corpus searches, statistical evaluation, and graphing.

Do not use as a primary text
By a reader
A non-programmer friend took a course with this book and asked me for help in learning R. I was surprised, since my experience was that corpus linguistics people rarely do any programming. Besides, I never thought of R as a tool for text processing.

Chapter One, 6 pages. In the introduction, the author claims that R is easier than Perl or Python for manipulating text. He argues that being able to program will allow you to do more interesting stuff than you can do with just a concordancing program.

Chapter Two, 12 pages. This is a concise explanation of what is involved in corpus-based analysis. He argues that all of corpus analysis boils down to frequency lists, collocation lists, and concordances. The two main non-simple issues are defining what a word is and processing tagged text.

Chapter Three, 86 pages. His whirlwind survey of essential features of R and regular expressions does not have a clear structure. There is far too little development going from simple to complex examples. Even knowing some R, I found the explanations required much rereading. I heard the students in the above mentioned course were extremely frustrated.

I agree with another reviewer that the code listings are badly displayed. More importantly, conventions used are not consistent through the chapters and accompanying web site, and are not consistent with good practice in the R community. There are many deeply nested functions, overuse of periods in names, a lack of whitespace, and long comments as single lines.

Chapter Four, 68 pages. Here is the justification for the book, examples of using R in corpus linguistics. They are all simple tasks using regular expressions to filter combinations of words and tags and to format output lines. What I learned from this chapter is that R is an inappropriate tool for text manipulation. First, R has few string-handling functions, so string operations take more steps than in the popular scripting languages. Second, manipulation of text in vectors requires a lot more bookeeping than in a string oriented language. Overall, R requires much more work and non-obvious intermediate steps. As for the writing, I found the explanations in this chapter particularly long-winded and roundabout.

Chapter Five, 46 pages. This is an overview of the basic ideas of statistical analysis, mostly independent of the rest of the book. This kind of chapter is common in textbooks and I have a strong objection to them. In such a brief introduction, many things are introduced without explanation, and ideas come too fast for the total newcomer to appreciate them. This chapter is a typical example.

Chapter Six, 6 pages. He gives a brief introduction to the data sets and exercises on the book's web site. He ends by mentioning several research topics in computational linguistics that utilize more sophisticated processing than is normally used in corpus linguistics.

In summary, chapters two and six were interesting, but the rest should not be used for primary learning material. One thing I did appreciate was the scattered examples of gotchas in processing corpora.

If you are using this text, this supplementary reading will help. For regular expressions, the most clear and simple book is Sams Teach Yourself Regular Expressions in 10 Minutes. If you have much computing experience, you may like the added context given in Introducing Regular Expressions. For an R tutorial, R For Dummies covers all you will need, but those with programming experience might prefer The Art of R Programming. Since text handling is a minor concern for the typical R user, it gets little treatment in books, so expect to read the R documentation for details on the relevant functions.

Considerate Corpus Linguistics and R Introduction
By John M. Ford
This book was not just written, it was designed--and well designed to teach readers about both corpus linguistics and the R statistics package. This electronic version allows busy readers with Kindles or iPhones to study productively during long commutes, even longer delays at the doctor's office, and endless unpunctuated speeches by boorish colleagues in staff meeting.

The six chapters of Stephan Th. Gries' book unfold in an instructionally sound sequence. Chapter 1 briefly introduces corpus linguistics and directs readers elsewhere for a thorough treatment of its history and theories. The second chapter defines word frequency lists, word collocations, and concordances--three basic analysis tools of the discipline. Chapter 3 shifts focus and introduces the R software. This is an excellent and thorough coverage of R data manipulation, programming, and the text processing needed to analyze linguistic corpora.

Building on this foundation, the book integrates R with linguistic analysis. Chapter 4 revisits word lists, collocations and concordances, teaching readers to implement these methods in R. Chapter 5 reviews the basics of statistical reasoning and introduces additional analysis techniques in R. Chapter 6 presents case studies and points readers to the book's supporting web site for associated data files and R syntax files.

The book is considerate of the reader. It uses only freely-available, open source software such as R, the Tinn-R text editor, and OpenOffice Calc. Beyond the price of the book and access to a computer, the author intends no financial barriers to learning. The micro-design of the chapters is also reader-friendly. R code and output are clearly marked and helpfully annotated. Frequent "Think Breaks" in the chapters challenge readers to solve a small problem before reading the answer. This technique encourages active reading and produces a feeling of satisfaction as one progresses through each section. Chapters end with "For further study/exploration" sections that contain pointers to R documentation, web resources, and further reading.

I recommend this book as a self-contained source about statistical methods in corpus linguistics as implemented in R. I would supplement it with Svenja Adolphs' Introducing Electronic Text Analysis to learn how the results of statistical analysis are used in applied linguistics and related disciplines.

By Peter Ellis
I came to this book as an R expert wanting to apply it to linguistics which is new to me, so I'm not quite the target audience.

R explanation is difficult to follow. R approach seems idiosyncratic and depends heavily on a few techniques. Code presentation is very poor. Structure of each section is very difficult to follow. Statistics and R are very basic. My recommendation is to learn linguistics elsewhere, learn R elsewhere, and combine them yourself.

Shakespeare, Trauma and Contemporary Performance (Routledge Studies in Shakespeare), by Catherine Silverstone

Shakespeare, Trauma and Contemporary Performance examines how contemporary performances of Shakespeare’s texts on stage and screen engage with violent events and histories. The book attempts to account for – but not to rationalize – the ongoing and pernicious effects of various forms of violence as they have emerged in selected contemporary performances of Shakespeare’s texts, especially as that violence relates to apartheid, colonization, racism, homophobia and war. Through a series of wide-ranging case studies, which are informed by debates in Shakespeare, trauma and performance studies and developed from extensive archival research, the book examines how performances and their documentary traces work variously to memorialize, remember and witness violent events and histories. In the process, Silverstone considers the ethical and political implications of attempts to represent trauma in performance, especially in relation to performing, spectatorship and community formation. Ranging from the mainstream to the fringe, key performances discussed include Gregory Doran’s Titus Andronicus (1995) for Johannesburg’s Market Theatre; Don C. Selwyn’s New Zealand-made film, The Maori Merchant of Venice (2001); Philip Osment’s appropriation of The Tempest in This Island’s Mine for London’s Gay Sweatshop (1988); and Nicholas Hytner’s Henry V (2003) for the National Theatre in London.

Review
Carroll is at his best (and that is very good indeed) when debunking and constructively criticizing the errors of others. . . . Indeed, his concluding essay is the best, most forceful and, indeed, biologically informed take-down of "spandrels" and the like that I have ever read. David Barash, University of Washington

Carroll's unswerving optimism is refreshing and lends a sense of inclusiveness and shared purpose to his work, all too rare in academic criticism. Tim Horvath, CogWeb

Literary Darwinism is a major work by a critic at the forefront of a developing paradigm . . . [that] requires the critics' thorough grounding in the biological and human sciences to do its important work. John Knapp, Interdisciplinary Literary Studies

"If you want to know what's going to be the next big topic in literary theory, read this powerful new collection of essays by the author of" Evolution and Literary Theory. In "Literary Darwinism Joseph Carroll argues that we should stop basing our view of literature on penseurs who have long been obsolete in their own fields, and listen instead to what modern science has to tell us about that forbidden topic human nature.
."
-Robin Headlam Wells, University of Surrey Roehampton
"A brilliant exposition of a new paradigm in literary criticism which, because it is among the first to bridge modern biology and the humanities, has a feel of permanence to it.
."
-Edward O. Wilson
"A series of clear-sighted and far-sighted views of early and modern literary critical and evolutionary thought, as seen from the high ridge Joseph Carroll has climbed to in the most promising new territory in literary studies.."
-Brian Boyd
"These authoritative writings of Joseph Carroll focus, update, and solidify the insights of his landmark work, Evolution and Literary Theory. Collected into one volume, they now can serve as a handbook for students, critics, and academics, an invaluable introduction to the general theory and concrete practice of Darwinian literary analysis.."
-Harold Fromm, co-editor of The Ecocriticism Reader
"Carroll's eye is that of an extremely perceptive literary critic. In fact, I would judge him to be one of the most acute and knowledgeable readers of fiction I've ever encountered."
-Denis Dutton, University of Canterbury, New Zealand, "Johns Hopkins University Press

Category Mistake
By D. S. Heersink
The human imagination is the fount of extraordinary creativity. "Flights of fancy" take us to places and ideas that only the mind can conceive, places where we create our own reality, if only for a time, a place where only "credibility" is a gauge, and often not even that. We've created more deities in our image than any single god can hold. We've traversed Aquinas's labyrinth of angelic worlds were no human has ever gone, and probably never will. Milton took us to Paradise, and explains how we lost it. Dante takes us through hell, purgatory, and back to Paradise. Marx's Utopia is a wonderlust of wishful aspirations and neurotic tensions. Freud's landscape of the psyche is unparalleled in its imagination, however false empirically. Borges takes us into places we can't get out, and we love the dead-ends. Science fiction takes us to worlds we want to explore without the constraints of our present limitations. It's all wonderful, delightful, provocative, and truly human. It's also fiction. We sometimes forget that.

The imaginative arts allow us "freedom" that the sciences, for example, limit. But that "freedom" is our window into ourselves, a projection of every possible nuance one can imagine. It allows us to create and fabricate all sorts of "alternative realities," explore different possibilities, stretch our limits, and go in directions that physics won't allow. Even those "worlds" that bear close resemblance to our own, such as Shakespeare's or Byron's, are still distant lands. We take a journey into realms only our imaginations understand. We must never lose this precious inheritance. But we also must not "confuse" it for the real. Nor try to "codify" it with overarching theories of interpretative hegemony. It remains a frontier that should not be reduced to ideology or the scientific method. That is both perversion and a "category mistake." It boxes-in that vestige of energy that must not be contained.

At first blush, literary Darwinism seems eminently sensible, using sociobiological insights of "life" itself to better understand our "creative lives." After all, we are humans first, and understanding our biological natures surely aids our understanding of each other, not the least of which is our own creative projects. With this level of approach, I have no cavil. It is clearly superior to the dogmatic Ivory Tower Drivel that has infected the Humanities over the past half century. Having "a foot on the ground" cannot but help bring our Humanities folk back to reality. But I cannot endorse a new "empirical" literary theory to replace the old ideological paradigm, however more sensible, because it just adds another template through which to force us through a sieve.

Being empirically-oriented myself, I cannot fault an English-literature professor suggesting we "re-impose" some reality in our literary theory. It's long been absent. Moreover, he's working in an environment hostile to such "realities," but his treatment is worse than the disease. He's advocating placing readers under imaging devices (e.g., fMRIs) to measure their responses to the literary experience, to tabulate the data, and show how it comports with all the other evolutionary work done in anthropology, biology, sociology, psychology, philosophy, etc. This is positively garrish, a project Darwin himself would find repugnant!

Let's situate Carroll in his predicament, and try to understand why he would make such an outlandish proposal. As a former Arnoldean, steeped in the Liberal Humanistic Tradition, he's convinced that only an appeal to "empiricism" will lift off the shackles of the Postmodernist Hegemon that dominates the Humanities. He's convinced that the "entrenched interests" will not budge otherwise, because it's their "bread and butter" to be contrarian, subversive, and radically irrational. He may be right. Certainly the English Departments in Anglo-American academies are a species of their own. And their ideological spue is toxic as well as dissonant. Asking why it persists, despite the onslaught of criticism from all other disciplines, only validates Carroll's point. It's entrenched.

But there is more. Carroll claims that the nexus of Marxism, Freudianism, and Deconstructionism creates a "whole" theory of the "world," arguably false, but complete. This claim needs to be taken seriously, even if I find it preposterous. Do these ideological flights of fancy really make a composite whole? Carroll insists the "nail" was sealed with Deconstructionism, which denies everything but "rhetoric," and then makes rhetoric so indeterminate, that all that is left is the assertion of the "will to power." Marxism and Freudianism just fill-in on the margins when anxieties get too tough. It's an interesting claim. And, if the claim is true, why? Why are English Departments exempt from substantiating their dogmas? No other academic discipline is "allowed" this latitude.

These questions need answers before we start forcing the "arts" through the "scientific" paradigm. Gilbert Ryle's famous phrase "category mistake" just screams at this indiscretion. And the "cure" is just as unsettling as the "sickness." Again, don't misunderstand me. Biological insights certainly enhance our understanding of imaginative works, because they both herald from "life" itself. Here we're on common ground. But "empiricizing" the imaginative arts should seem terribly dissonant, and "measuring" the aesthetic experience is fundamentally incoherent. Even if it could be done, why would we? To save the Humanities from itself? The prescription is worse than the problem.

Notwithstanding this broader reservation, Carroll's articulate, incisive, and well-crafted Humanistic scholarship blends with sociobiological facts and theory to produce one of the most sustained indictments of the impoverished Humanities and a compelling raison d'etre to look to proven sociobiological theory, coupled with Wilson's advocacy of "consilience" (unity of knowledge), to move Humanistic Study forward to a far more promising frontier. There's no looking back.

A Potentially Revolutionary Contribution
By Jonathan A. Gottschall
The various essays, articles and book reviews comprising Joseph Carroll's Literary Darwinism are rooted in two principles: first, humans share a common nature that can be revealed through the scientific method; second, this universal nature is the product of relentless Darwinian selection over eons. While this is obviously orthodox stuff in the world of behavioral biology, these notions remain quite heretical among the social constructivists who continue to dominate the world of literary studies. From Carroll's simple principles flow corollaries with large implications for literary studies and behavioral biology. The most important corollary for literary scholars is that a large proportion of all that has been said, written, or merely thought in the realm of literary theory and criticism over the last several decades is obviously and often breathtakingly wrong. This is because all of the dominant "poststructuralist" approaches--Lacanian, Foucauldian, Marxist, radical feminist, deconstructionist, and others--are organized around an adamantine core of social constructivist theory that is profoundly at odds both with Darwinian theory and with practical research in what Steven Pinker calls "the new sciences of human nature."

Carroll's argument is really quite simple. All literary criticism and theory is ultimately based on theories of human nature (even the theory that there is no such thing as human nature is a theory of human nature). Literary scholarship constructed on unsound theoretical foundations--on essentially faulty premises about human tendencies and potential--must itself be unsound, no matter how internally self-consistent. The chapters of Literary Darwinism articulate Carroll's vision of a foundation-up reorganization of literary studies along Darwinian lines. Carroll describes a Darwinian Literary Study where judgments about literary plots, characters, and themes are rooted in the bedrock of evolutionary theory, are disciplined by the findings of scientific research, and, when possible, are tested using scientific methods.

Literary scholars and evolutionists who are interested in the concept of consilience will also be interested in Literary Darwinism, which represents one of the most serious and sustained attempts to establish consilience between the humanities and behavioral biology-and to plumb its implications.

A new paradigm
By Stephen A. Haines
The greatest mind of the 19th Century, perhaps of any century, was that of Charles Darwin. If any mind of the 20th Century might be said to equal Darwin's it would be that of Edward Osborne Wilson. An entomologist, it was Wilson who demonstrated the implications of insect societies for human cultures. His ideas were first promulgated in his 1975 book "Sociobiology" and bore full fruit with "Consilience" in 1998. In "Consilience", Wilson proposed that, as humans were as much a part of Nature as any other creature, our behaviour traits, including the arts and literature, should be viewed in the light of evolution. Wilson demonstrated how the human spirit would be expanded, not diminished, by such a framework. The research ensuing since "Sociobiology" has affirmed Wilson's insight. How would such scenario apply to literature?

Joseph Carroll, a literary critic, incorporates Wilson's insights throughout this collection. Carroll argues that our outlook on the world would be expanded, not confined, by consciously applying Darwin's principles to our literature. Many authors, he notes, have done this through an intuitive sense. Jane Austen, hardly a Darwinian, still presented her characters fully integrated within their natural environment. Austen distinguished between which environments suited a character and which left the individual feeling displaced. For Carroll, this is an encouraging sign. Observant and astute writers can apply what he calls the "Darwinian paradigm", imparting a more natural and plausible foundation to fiction. He wants new writers to understand how to employ those principles from the outset. In this, Carroll is following where Wilson is pointing. The result, Carroll feels, will be an improved basis for literature's production and analysis.

Narrative itself, not only common to the human condition, but apparently necessary to it, reflects our ancestral past. As Wilson pointed out, human beings are a social, not a solitary, animal. Carroll's thesis furthers this idea by noting that narrative accounts are a means of identification within a community. Depicted human interactions must reflect that situation and be based on firm knowledge of Darwinian principles, not on assumptions nor sketchy awareness. He criticises authors who pay lip service to the "Darwinian paradigm" without truly understanding its tenets.

Carroll's thesis is based on what is known as "the Adapted Mind". Our mental states, whether in writing or reading, are derived from the long evolutionary path we've traversed. We aren't separated or "elevated" from it. Much of his attention is given to revealing the false notion of "poststructuralism" - that there are no "truths" [whether absolute or relative] and that authors have no intent in their writings, simply expression formed by local "culture". Darwin's idea, for example, could only have occured in Victorian Britain. Obviously, in such a framework, evolutionary roots have no role in composition, reading or criticism. It seems trite when Carroll writes "the subject matter of literature is human experience", but he feels we need to be reminded of that truth. Writing, he contends, must reflect that truism more forcefully than is often the case. Steps have already been taken, he notes. Such works as "Biopoetics" and "Homo Aestheticus" are indicators of a more realistic approach in fiction.

Carroll's three part collection - a view of the "literary landscape", theory and practical criticism, and assessments of Darwian biographers and critics, is a splendid example of how consilience works. He is opening a new frontier of both writing and reading, and is optimistic for its success. He stresses that a merger of the humanities and sciences, is not only desireable, but necessary. A better knowledge of ourselves must involve a better knowledge of our world. That can only be beneficial to all humanity and its habitat, using literature as a means. Outside in the Teaching Machine (Routledge Classics), by Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak

Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak is one of the most pre-eminent postcolonial theorists writing today and a scholar of genuinely global reputation. This collection, first published in 1993, presents some of Spivak’s most engaging essays on works of literature such as Salman Rushdie's controversial Satanic Verses, and twentieth century thinkers such as Jacques Derrida and Karl Marx. Spivak relentlessly questions and deconstructs power structures where ever they operate. In doing so, she provides a voice for those who can not speak, proving that the true work of resistance takes place in the margins, Outside in the Teaching Machine.

Note on "More on Power/Knowledge" chapter
By Michael
This is not really a review of the totality of the text - Instead, I wish to comment on Spivak's specific essay, "More on Power/Knowledge." (I believe it is the 2nd or 3rd chapter)

I have always struggled with Spivak's work. Her post-deconstructionist tendencies towards skepticism and obscurantism both frustrate and challenge me as a thinker. Writers like Spivak - by the very method of their presentation -seem to repeatedly face certain inevitable contradictions and obstacles that doom their very criticisms to inefficacy. Terry Eagleton articulates this well when he writes:

"Post-colonial theory makes heavy weather of a respect for the Other, but its most immediate Other, the reader, is apparently dispensed from this sensitivity. Radical academics, one might have naively imagined, have a certain political responsibility to ensure that their ideas win an audience outside senior common rooms. In US academia, however, such popularising or 'plumpes Denken' is unlikely to win you much in the way of posh chairs and prestigious awards, so that left-wingers like Spivak, for all their stock-in-trade scorn for academia, can churn out writing far more inaccessible to the public than the literary élitists who so heartily despise them."

Sorry for the lengthy quote, but Eagleton has a gift for clear, to-the-point expression. It is ironic that thinkers like Spivak attempt to critique the history of Western 'arrogance' and elitism by way of more lofty, academic language that significantly narrows its audience to a marginal group of academics.

I haven't reviewed the book - once again, sorry - But I say all this to express my frustration for Spivak's 'more original' work. However, as an academic, I have found Spivak's more exegetical work (her 'readings' of other texts) profoundly helpful and beneficial. Her essay "More on Power/Knowledge" helped me understand the perplexities of Foucault's thought more than any other secondary text on the French thinker. I recommend this book with enthusiasm just for that essay. She explains the workings of power in relation to the subject in a way more accurate (I think) than most English texts on the topic. This is because she takes serious Foucault's claim to be a 'Nominalist' and because she reads Foucault in the context of the European continental tradition of philosophy. Specifically, she cleverly reads his notion of power/knowledge against the work of Heidegger and Derrida.

I would say that this text assisted my understanding of Foucault in a way similar to how her famous 'preface' to 'Of Grammatology' has helped so many students understand the significance of Derrida as a 20th century thinker. Once again, this is ironic - her ability to simultaneously make other thinkers so comprehendible while making her own thought so obscure.

My recommendation of this essay does not warrant purchasing this over-priced academic book. But if one is reading Foucault -especially his work on power- I recommend finding this book in the library and reading "More on Power/Knowledge."

A Frustratingly Flawed "Classic"
By Whit Frazier
Spivak's book is challenging, thought-provoking, and much worth the investment of time and mental energy required to read it. I would especially recommend the first essay, which is framed as an interview, the essay on Salman Rushdie, and the final essay in the book, in which she brings all her ideas together in an examination of post-colonial theory. These essays bring Spivak's concerns of catachresis, performance and post-structuralist philosophy together nicely. As one previous reviewer commented however, Spivak's own "catachrestic" approach to writing makes much of the work in this book difficult to read, and the feeling one gets is that the book is targeted only to other academics. This kind of catachrestic writing, originated by Derrida, has been used by several post-structuralist theorists to varying degrees of success - perhaps most successfully employed by Henry Louis Gates in his seminal work, "The Signifying Monkey."

However, the ideas presented by Spivak -- especially those concerning and surrounding essentialism versus anti-essentialism when approaching the question of feminism or civil rights -- (basically deciding whether or not to accept the falsely constructed concepts of gender or race or any other social construct you might choose) -- in order to fight the social order which oppresses people, are especially important today, and will remain so as long as these social constructs continue to exist. Which is to say that Spivak's book remains a classic (which is of course itself a catachresis - a social construct), even if it is sometimes frustratingly flawed in the way that Spivak's language often alienates instead of engages the reader.

Unabashedly deconstructivist
By A Customer
Deconstruction is alive and kicking in the writing of la Spivak. Oddly enough, when noone else seems to be doing it. Yet, in her practical criticism of theory and pedagogy Spivak is more than coherent and consistent, and this is due mostly to her endorsement of post-structuralist ways. Highly recommended for those who want to witness a truly serious academic stretching a point!

Blaxploitation Films of the 1970s: Blackness and Genre (Studies in African American History and Culture), by Novotny Lawrence

During the early years of the motion picture industry, black performers were often depicted as shuckin’ and jivin’ caricatures. Specifically, black males were portrayed as toms, coons and bucks, while the mammy and tragic mulatto archetypes circumscribed black femininity. This misrepresentation began to change in the 1950s and 1960s when performers such as Dorothy Dandridge and Sidney Poitier were cast in more positive roles. These performers paved the way for the black exploitation or blaxploitation movement, which began in 1970 and flourished until 1975. The movement is characterized by films that feature a black hero or heroine, black supporting characters, a predominately black urban setting, a display of black sexuality, excessive violence, and a contemporary rhythm and blues soundtrack. Blaxploitation films were made across varying genres, but the questionable elements of some of the pictures caused them to be referred to as "blaxploitation" films with little or no regard given to their generic categorization. This book examines how Cotton Comes to Harlem (1970), Blacula (1972), The Mack (1973), and Cleopatra Jones (1973) can be classified within the detective, horror, gangster, and cop action genres, respectively, and illustrates the manner in which the inclusion of "blackness" represents a significant revision to the aforementioned genres.
