In Foundations of Ethical Practice, Research, and Teaching in Psychology and Counseling, Kitchener and Anderson lay a conceptual foundation for thinking well about ethical problems.
Whereas the first edition focused mainly on ethical reasoning and decision making, this new edition draws more explicitly on all components of James Rest's model of moral/ethical behavior, including moral/ethical sensitivity, moral/ethical decision making, moral/ethical motivation, and the ego strength to follow through on the decision.
The book addresses five key principles of ethical decision making and includes updated sections on research, teaching and supervision, and practice. It discusses the relationship of the ethical principles and the model of ethical decision-making to professional ethical codes, while offering discussion questions, case scenarios, and activities to help the reader focus on ethical character and virtue.
Foundations of Ethical Practice, Research, and Teaching in Psychology and Counseling gives psychologists, students, and trainees the tools they need to analyze their own ethical quandaries and take the right action.

Review
For the first edition:
"Karen Kitchener is well known for her pioneering work on reflective judgement (King & Kitchener, 1994), a theory that has shaped thinking about adolescent and adult intellectual development for over 20 years. In her recent highly accessible book...Kitchener again brings a decidedly applied focus to understand and then improve professionals' and academics' ability to make tough ethical choices about what is right, or at least ethically defensible....The book is intellectually rigorous and yet practical. It is also an excellent reference....Karen Kitchener's professional ethics book will provoke both ethical thought and ethical action."
—Journal of Moral Education
"Kitchener's approach is definitely thought-provoking and well founded. In addition to her integration of ethical theory and professional ethics, her emphasis on social and gender issues throughout the book...shows an awareness of the pervasiveness and ethical relevance of these issues that is still lacking in the profession at large....On the whole, Foundations of Ethical Practice, Research, and Teaching in Psychology is a valuable and distinctive addition to the literature on ethics in psychology and achieves what it sets out to do."
—Metapsychology Online
"It is refreshing in a book on ethics to see a discussion of virtue ethics, often a missing element....The strong emphasis on the fundamental moral principles and the unusually complete grounding of the book in ethical theory and research, make it valuable to psychologists no matter what ethics code edition is current. The completeness of the discussion of theoretical foundations as well as the research components are useful features for classroom teachers."
—Contemporary Psychology
"The complexities of being an ethical professional who is sensitive to the needs and contributions of diverse cultural groups and committed to social justice are addressed in a straightforward, informative, and helpful manner in this significant book. The emphases on how to conceptualize ethics and ethical decision-making, incorporating meaningful principles and virtues, as well as the book's focus on key issues and multiple applications via case examples, provoke thoughtful reflection that make these chapters a must read for seasoned professionals as well as students."
—Naomi M. Meara
University of Notre Dame
"Karen Kitchener deftly traverses the complex fields of psychological ethical practice and philosophical ethics. This enormously accessible book challenges readers to become ethical psychologists and activists for social justice. Kitchener synthesizes recent theory and research on ethical principles, virtues, character, and behavior to provide a useful decision making model for clinicians and academics alike. Her cases and discussion of ethical lapses provide concrete examples that will help psychologists improve the well being of both individuals and the social systems that powerfully influence them."
—Mary Brabeck
Lynch School of Education, Boston College
"This is an outstanding contribution....The coverage is comprehensive, the writing is clear and incisive, and the examples are thought-provoking. The author's reasoned perspective, her deep knowledge of ethics in psychology, and helping professions shine through in every chapter. An appendix listing all the book's case examples is included--a gem of an idea. An excellent discussion of foundational (philosophical) issues is provided and social justice and responsibility are also well addressed. This is a book informed both by a firm grasp of accumulated scholarly knowledge as well as by thoughtful personal reflection."
—Randolph B. Pipes, Ph.D.
Auburn University
"This is a must read for the conscientious professional as well as for instructors and students. Dr. Kitchener has written an intellectually stimulating book that identifies the critical issues in professional ethics for psychologists. In addition, she has woven theory and practice together in her case scenarios and ongoing discussion of how one deals with ethical dilemmas. Last, but certainly not least, she draws upon her professional experience as a former APA ethics board member, ethics instructor and researcher--this gives the text a personal touch. I highly recommend this book--don't miss the opportunity to tap into Dr. Kitchener's wisdom about and experience with ethical issues and dilemmas for today's psychologist!"

Text Review
By Franny Luvs All
I had to purchase this book for a graduate class. The book has interesting examples, but is wrought with typos (spelling and grammatical errors, omitted words, etc.). I am always incredibly disappointed when a book that is supposed to be teaching me a subject is so poorly edited. These kinds of mistakes are distracting to readers. The title of this book would also lead one to believe that the ethics around counseling will be discussed at length, however, there is little mention of how to develop boundaries with clients and what is and is not proper form. This book only talks about the need for boundaries, with little explanation on how to achieve this goal. Personally, if I were to teach an ethics course, I would find a more comprehensive text.

Comprehensive Plus More
By Patricia K. Spiegel
Drs. Kitchener and Anderson have done an admirable job of covering both the topics one would expect in a comprehensive ethics textbook for mental health professionals and counselors (e.g., confidentiality, multiple role relationships, and competence) as well as delving into deeper territory. What I found most impressive is the seamless integration of issues involving the ethical acculturation into the profession (developing an ethical identity) and explorations of ethical sensitivity into the standard topic fare. The authors rightly conclude that directives found in the principles of ethics codes of professional organizations do not cover every conceivable decision arising from the increasing complexity of ethical dilemmas; thus they emphasize the importance of attending to underlying moral virtues in our decision-making. Readers will find both practical advice as well as excellent discussions of the foundations of moral reasoning in this single volume. The last chapter on social justice considers the way we treat each other and offers a fresh perspective on advocacy, respect and human rights, issues that should concern all counselors and mental health professionals.

Terribly Written.
By Ron
I have to read this book for a doctorate program in psychology. The book is fraught with every kind of grammatical error you can imagine. I have never read a book with more errors in it than this one and it's written for graduate students and professionals! Spelling errors, grammatical errors, words repeated one after the other, incorrect format for citations, incorrect statistics, incorrect wording in quotations, and I've only struggled through the first 8 chapters. At some points you just have to guess what the authors meant to say, because the wording doesn't even make sense. By no means am I a critic for grammar in text books, but when you're assigned a text book that has obvious errors throughout, it's a bit unsettling, as well as distracting when trying to read and learn the content! It's as if this book wasn't even proofread and I cannot understand how it was published.
Sometimes you read a book and you're amazed that you actually spotted a mistake in the book! How could this be?? You won't have any trouble with this one because at times there were 3 or more per page! I wish I wasn't assigned this book and hadn't starting highlighting in it so that I could send it back. At points it's as if the authors were transcribing the words through Siri or Dragon Dictate or something because some sentences and wording don't even make sense!
Did Amazon send me the rough draft? I really haven't read any book in my life with so many mistakes. Any professors looking for a book for an Ethics course, please find another one. I'm embarrassed to have to finish reading this book. I rarely write reviews, but feel that this book has so many errors, that it dumbfounds me who gave this the approval to be published and subsequently utilized in academia.
