Making Transnational Feminism: Rural Women, NGO Activists, and Northern Donors in Brazil (Perspectives on Gender), by Millie Thayer

This ethnographic study examines the transnational relations among feminist movements at the end of the twentieth century, exploring two differently situated women’s organizations in the Northeast Brazilian state of Pernambuco.

The conventional narrative of globalization tells the story of inexorable forces beyond the capacity of individuals to mute or transcend. But this study tells a different story, one of social actors purposefully weaving cross-border relationships. From this vantage point, global social forces are not immaculately conceived. Instead, they are constituted by human actors with their own interests and identities, located in particular social contexts.

Making Transnational Feminism takes what some have called "global civil society" as its object, moving beyond both dire predictions and euphoric celebrations to understand how transnational political relationships are constructed and sustained across social and geographical divides. It also provides a compelling case study for use in advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in globalization, gender studies, and social movements.

Review

"Making Transnational Feminism (Thayer, 2010) is a great illustration of the processes that lead to organizational movements, and it is a book that is appropriate for students, educators, feminists, nongovernmental organization (NGO) workers, and others who are generally interested in transnational social movements. It is most useful for people like me who are new to this field, and who want to gain a deeper understanding of how the theoretical bases of transnational feminism are implemented in activist movements."
―The Weekly Qualitative Report

"...this is a rich, interesting and well-crafted study. It is extremely readable, accessible to students, and a critical resource for for scholars of Latin American social movements, transnational feminisms, global civil society, and the transnational networks of non-governmental organizations. It will be of interest to students across the disciplines of anthropology, sociology, politics, geography and women’s studies."
―The Canadian Journal of Sociology, Vol. 35, No. 2, 2010

"Millie Thayer, in her innovative and accessible Making Transnational Feminism, illuminates the complex dynamics of transnational feminist relations, rooting her analysis in close observation of the interactions among northeastern Brazilian rural women workers, urban professional feminists, and feminists and funders from the global North. In this clear and compassionate work, Thayer takes what she terms the “ant’s eye view” (7) to see the impact of transnational discourses and resources on women’s and feminist activism in the global South. Relying on a decade’s worth of field research, Thayer offers a nuanced understanding of the power of transnational flows, examining their impacts on overlapping counterpublics based in part on class and geographic location.  Thayer unfolds her multilayered analysis of original ethnography through a design that she deftly crafts from chapter to chapter, clearly indicating to the reader where she is and where she is going."―Signs, Vol 36, no. 4, Elisabeth Jay Friedman, University of San Francisco, USA

In this volume, Kathleen Nader has compiled an articulate and comprehensive guide to the complex process of assessment in youth and adolescent trauma. There are many issues that are important to evaluating children and adolescents, and it is increasingly clear that reliance on just one type of assessment does not provide the most accurate results. From history to recent advances, this book covers a wide range of methods and measures for assessing trauma, including case examples to illustrate the integration of these different facets. Altogether, the broad scope and inclusive depth of this work make it an essential addition to the field of trauma assessment.

Excellent resource !
By K. J. F. Roy
Excellent resource to have on hand. I recommend it to all who are dealing with this specific age group for the first time. Children are not just smaller adults, and teens are a whole different species to decode. Most valuable information, well worth the cost to add to your reference library.

International Election Monitoring, Sovereignty, and the Western Hemisphere: The Emergence of an International Norm (Studies in Internationa

This book traces the process by which national elections became international events or, more precisely, what the effects of this process are on state sovereignty.

Contrary to the conventional wisdom in International Relations - to judge by the neglect of this phenomenon in the literature - this book argues that the study of IEM does not belong only in the field of comparative politics. As a system-wide phenomenon, IEM should not be restricted to the study of purely domestic politics or of foreign policy. This book contends that sovereignty has been partially transformed by the recent emergence of IEM. Furthermore, the author locates the origins of this change in the Americas, claiming that the western hemisphere's normative structure - what Santa-Cruz calls the Western Hemisphere Idea (WHI) - was particularly conducive to this new understanding of state sovereignty. This is the first work to engage the issue of IEM in a comprehensive manner from a theoretical perspective. International Election Monitoring, Sovereignty, and the Western Hemisphere covers a broad and relevant scholarly literature, and the cases comparisons widen the book's appeal, since they illustrate a useful range of experience.

Review

"Long overdue, Layli Phillips' The Womanist Reader is a pioneering text that illuminates the genealogy of womanism and its complex meanings. Phillips' articulation of its connections with and departures from both ‘feminism’ and ‘black feminism’ is cogent and provocative.  This anthology lays the groundwork for future scholarship on this little understood analytic construct, but critically important intervention in the broad project of social justice."
―Beverly Guy-Sheftall, editor of Words of Fire: An Anthology of African American Feminist Thought and Director of the Women's Center, Spelman College

"Bringing together many groundbreaking articulations of womanist thought, Layli Philips has assembled a superb collection. The Womanist Reader is essential reading for womanists, feminists, activists, and scholars in many disciplines, including women’s studies, Africana studies, African-American Studies, ethnic studies, and American Studies."
―AnaLouise Keating, coeditor of this bridge we call home and Professor of Women’s Studies, Texas Woman's University

"This important reader is a theoretical and methodological breakthrough in our understanding of womanist scholarship from a wide array of disciplines. This is essential reading that highlights the contributions of womanism to gender theory and praxis."

―Filomina Steady, editor of The Black Woman Cross-Culturally and Professor and Chair of Africana Studies, Wellesley College

"Layli Phillips' comprehensive anthology is a much-needed reader for today and for generations to come.  The Womanist Reader chronicles twenty-five years of juxtapositioned insights and empowering revelations by womanists across the disciplines."

―Katie G. Cannon, author of Katie's Canon: Womanism and the Soul of the Black Community

Sourcebook : contemporary Africana women's intropective and worldview.
By Greer C. Ifatoki-sillah
The Womanist Reader is an excellent compendium of contemporary womanist scholars and theorists' worldview as women. The sources and viewpoints are vaied, i.e. from several diciplines and universities. The articles would be difficult to access, if Dr. Phillips had not mined and collected them for this compendium.

This volume is absolutely necessary for any contemporary woman of African descent who's looking to enhance/enlarge her views on the roles of Africana women in the 21st century.

Merit Aid and the Politics of Education (Studies in Higher Education), by Erik C. Ness

While a substantial number of studies have evaluated the effects of merit aid programs, there is a surprising lack of any systematic consideration of how states determine eligibility criteria for these scholarships. The selectivity of merit aid eligibility criteria can be as important as whether or not such programs are adopted. If, for example, merit aid programs have broad, easily-attained initial eligibility criteria, then a large proportion of high school graduates, including low-income and under-represented students, will gain eligibility. On the other hand, if the criteria are more rigorous, then a smaller proportion of students, likely those already planning to attend and with the means to afford college, will be eligible. Thus, this innovative book - the first to deepen the descriptive and conceptual understanding of the process by which states determine merit aid scholarship criteria - is crucial to understanding merit aid's success and failures at fulfilling the promise of education.

Criminological Perspectives on Race and Crime (Criminology and Justice Studies), by Shaun L. Gabbidon

Criminological Perspectives on Race and Crime examines an array of perspectives that have been used to contextualize criminal behavior among racial/ethnic minorities. Beginning with an historical review of a single perspective, each chapter takes into account the historical development of that perspective and the way in which race/ethnicity is contextualized by that theory. Because of the international nature of the overrepresentation of racial/ethnic minorities and immigrants in justice systems around the globe, the book also reviews international research. Throughout the chapters, the author considers which perspectives have shown the most promise in contextualizing the overrepresentation of racial/ethnic minorities and immigrants in justice systems around the world.

Review

'Through wide-ranging scholarship and enviable imagination, Shaun Gabbidon does much to…illuminate key theoretical pathways for moving toward a systematic understanding of how race is implicated in criminal behavior. Rich in detail, broad in scope, and easily read, this volume should find a prominent place on every scholar’s bookshelf and be assigned in courses as a companion to traditional criminological theory texts.' - Francis T. Cullen, University of Cincinnati, USA

'This book reveals criminology’s quiet obsession with race and crime, illuminating how every theoretical perspective in the canon has grappled with the issue. Gabbidon masters the field to produce a text of impressive depth and breadth. It is inclusive yet focused, readable without being over-simplified and critical without being prescriptive. It is an essential resource for criminological theorists and students of racism, ethnicity, crime and justice.' - Ben Bowling, King’s College, London, UK

'Questions about race and crime are among the most important topics in criminology today.  This impressive book presents an extensive and thorough discussion of that subject.  [It provides] an in-depth discussion and analysis [of] mainstream criminology theories focus[ing] on their application to and implications for the issues of race.  [Using] a broad-ranging presentation of research on race and crime, both qualitative and quantitative, [the book] includes a considerable amount of material that is otherwise not very accessible…I strongly recommend this book.' - Thomas J. Bernard, The Pennsylvania State University, USA

Black Feminist Thought: Knowledge, Consciousness, and the Politics of Empowerment (Routledge Classics), by Patricia Hill Collins

In spite of the double burden of racial and gender discrimination, African-American women have developed a rich intellectual tradition that is not widely known. In Black Feminist Thought, originally published in 1990, Patricia Hill Collins set out to explore the words and ideas of Black feminist intellectuals and writers, both within the academy and without. Here Collins provides an interpretive framework for the work of such prominent Black feminist thinkers as Angela Davis, bell hooks, Alice Walker, and Audre Lorde. Drawing from fiction, poetry, music and oral history, the result is a superbly crafted and revolutionary book that provided the first synthetic overview of Black feminist thought and its canon.

"With the publication of Black Feminist Thought, black feminism has moved to a new level. Her work sets a standard for the discussion of black women's lives, experiences, and thought that demands rigorous attention to the complexity of these experiences and an exploration of a multiplicity of responses." -- Women's Review of Books

Collins' Intersectional Approach To The Analysis of Oppression, A Feminist Philosophy Classic
By BestPhilosophyBooksDotOrg
Patricia Hill Collins’ *Black Feminist Thought: Knowledge, Consciousness, and the Politics of Empowerment* develops an intersectional approach to the analysis of oppression.

Collins argues that African-American women are uniquely positioned to understand how oppression works because of their experiences at the intersections of race, gender and class based oppressions.

Using an interdisciplinary framework, Hill Collin’s own work gives voice to oral histories, poetry, fiction, music history, and more. Black Feminist Thought is a very readable and enjoyable text, but it also will make readers think hard about the nature of oppression on multiple levels. Readers will also explore the nature of resistance, from where the next effective forms of resistance will emerge, and what these will look like.

Readers interested in these topics will also enjoy Audre Lorde and Maria Lugones’ work - see *Sister Outsider* and *Pilgrimages Peregrinajes*, respectively.

AN INSIGHTFUL ANALYSIS
By Steven H Propp
Patricia Hill Collins, (born 1948) is Professor of Sociology at the University of Maryland, College Park, and the former head of the Department of African American Studies at the University of Cincinnati, as well as past President of the American Sociological Association Council. She has also written the books Black Sexual Politics: African Americans, Gender, and the New Racism, Another Kind of Public Education: Race, Schools, the Media, and Democratic Possibilities (Simmons College/Beacon Press Race, Education, and Democracy), Fighting Words: Black Women and the Search for Justice (Contradictions of Modernity), and Race, Class, & Gender: An Anthology.

She wrote in the Preface to this 1991 book, "This book reflects one stage in my ongoing struggle to regain my voice. Over the years I have tried to replace the external definitions of my life forwarded by dominant groups with my own self-defined standpoint... Finally, writing this book has convinced me of the need to reconcile subjectivity and objectivity in producing scholarship... I discovered that the both/and conceptual stance of Black feminist thought allowed me to be both objective and subjective, to possess both an Afrocentric and a feminist consciousness, and to be both a respectable scholar and an acceptable mother."

Here are some quotations from the book:

"I cite a range of Black women thinkers not because I think Black women have a monopoly on the ideas presented; instead I aim to demonstrate the range and depth of thinkers who exist in my community." (Pg. 16)
"Blue-eyed, blond, thin white women could not be considered beautiful without the Other---Black women with classical African features of dark skin, broad noses, full lips, and kinky hair." (Pg. 79)
"As bloodmothers and othermothers in Black extended families, women are key to transmitting an Afrocentric worldview." (Pt. 146)
"But because Black women have had to struggle against white male interpretations of the world in order to express a self-defined standpoint, Black feminist thought can best be viewed as subjugated knowledge." (Pg. 201-202)
