Doing... undoing...

`Undoing Gender' is certainly a much easier read than 'Gender Trouble' and 'Bodies That Matter'. However, it still presents thoughtful reflections relevant to Butler's earlier work. It's so gloomy to read multiple texts by the same author (especially in the academic field) and find they all explore the same viewpoint- that's why it is really refreshing to read Butler's work in succession to witness the 'redoing' of ideas. Butler's up to date frameworks are especially relevant in the forever changing realm of gender.

However, in reading Butler's work I find it necessary to consult a whole heap of other titles, including work by Freud, Foucault, Lacan. Keep this in mind... it's not a light read! Consider it more a starting point.

I could understand it!

This is Butler's most accessible book. It continues where Gender Trouble left off, addressing the regulation of gender and how that affects people. It was great to hear someone finally talking about the people affected by discourse, rather than just creating new words without thinking about their effects. However, Butler didn't follow through with any practical steps besides some jargon about alliances and new strategies.

There's also a good section in which Butler takes on Rosi Braidotti and the entire school of sexual difference theory.

What is a "livable" life?

In "Undoing Gender" Butler engages in a rather provocative discussion of the normative structure of gender and the "livability" of those lives that do not fit neatly into what she sees as a hegemonic, male/female "gender binary." In her discussion she draws heavily on the work of Foucault, though she does not strictly adhere to his discourse theory throughout all of the essays. Though she tends to be redundant, the book is worth reading, particularly if you are interested in what it would be like to "radically" rethink gender.

It is somewhat dull as it contains no maps

This is a decent text on this specific area. It is somewhat dull as it contains no maps, timelines, or illustrations. I prefer history texts that utilize these tools for better organization. There is great detail on the Imperial Crisis leading up to the war, and a good description on the problems the early republic had to deal with. It is a little lax on the actual details of the war so if you are looking for a military description of the revolutionary war, this is not it. For an amazing text on this era, I recommend "The Glorious Cause" by Middlekauff.

This Cogliano text serves its purpose as a general and brief description of the revolutionary war period from the end of the Seven Years War through the War of 1812.

Textbook for Class

I liked this book for class. The chapters are short and the material is easy to understand. The viewpoint of the American Revolution is different in this book from other US History perspectives. It looks at the Revolution from an Atlantic viewpoint rather than an American or British only view.

About the Author

Cyrus Marcellus Ellis is a professor of counselor education at Governors State University, University Park, IL. He instructs graduate courses in CACREP approved counseling program and is a therapist treating adolescents and adults suffering emotive and addiction issues. Dr. Ellis is a member of ACA, where he is on the editorial board of the Journal of Counseling and Development as well as The Human Rights Committee and the Association for Counselor Educators and Supervisors. He is President-elect of Illinois Association for Multicultural Counseling.

Jon Carlson is a distinguished professor in the division of Psychology and Counseling at Governors State University and psychologist at the Wellness Clinic in Lake Geneva, WI. Dr. Carlson has published 40 books, 150 journal articles and developed over 200 professional video and DVD programs, mainly for APA.* A past president of the International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors, he was named a Living Legend in Counseling by the ACA in 2004.

About the Author

Richard J. Morris is the Meyerson Distinguished Professor of Disability and Rehabilitation and Professor and Director of the School Psychology Program in the Department of Special Education, Rehabilitation, and School Psychology at The University of Arizona. He has authored or edited 11 books and more than 100 journal articles and book chapters in the areas of special education and rehabilitation, child psychotherapy and child behavior disorders, and behavior modification.

Nancy Mather is Professor of Special Education in the Department of Special Education, Rehabilitation, and School Psychology at The University of Arizona.  She specializes in the areas of assessment, reading, writing, and learning disabilities. She is a co-author of The Woodcock-Johnson III achievement test and has co-authored two books on interpretation and application of the WJ III. She has recently co-authored two books: one on intervention and management strategies for classroom teachers and another that deals with report writing.

Encyclopedia of Counseling Third Edition

I took the NCE exam in July 2008 and just received my grade -- I passed! Not only passed but did very well. This book is a MUST have for the NCE Exam -- it is the ONLY book I studied to prepare for the exam -- except for the statistics section I went back to my college textbook for further review. Make sure you know the NAMES of the different theorists and their theories for the Career Counseling section and there were more family counseling questions then I had expected on the exam. Definitely buy this book to prepare for the NCE exam!

This book is brilliant!

I wish there were more study guides like this. I bought an online workshop, two huge books, and flash cards to study for the NCE. And three people had recommended this book, as well - it also has incredible reviews. So I rented it on my kindle app - awesome way to do it - but I didn't look at it for awhile. I was having trouble studying with my other materials and was getting closer to my exam, so I check out the purple book and WOW!

The way this is laid out is so perfect for my learning style. This book taught me more than I got from reading and using flash cards with the other stuff.

I highly recommend this book for your NCE prep! Oh, and I took my exam yesterday - I PASSED! 34 points over the minimum passing score!

This book is a must for anyone prepping for the nce

This is the best study guide that I've seen available. I purchased a few different guides and practice test booklets when I tool my nce and this one was by far the most helpful. Rosenthal has a good style of writing that makes a 700+ study guide readable without being board to tears. The book is separated into sections that allow you to focus on areas where you might struggle and the questions are well worded.
