Judith Butler in Conversation is a valuable resource for academics, students and researchers in narrative therapies, psychology, cultural studies, theatre, gender, politics, feminism, education and communication. The incredible intellect of Judith Butler is initially made accessible through conversations with Bronyn Davies, a post structural feminist researcher and academic at the University of Western Sydney. Davies interviews Butler about aspects of her thinking and writing and asks salient questions that translate Butler's work just as writers have translated Foucault's work. Subsequent to Davies conversation, various other academics relate Butler's thoughts to their own spheres of research and thinking. These cover discourse, gender emergence, refugees, education and the experience of childhood in a pluralistic society. There are multiple conversations within this text. About the Author
Professor Josef Meri is a specialist in the history of interfaith relations in the Middle East in past and present, Islamic history and civilization and the history of religions. In 2014 he was awarded the prestigious Goldziher Prize in Jewish-Muslim Relations by the Center for the Study of Jewish-Christian-Muslim Relations at Merrimack College in recognition of his teaching and research. He has travelled throughout the Middle East and Europe and has lived in the United Kingdom, Amman, Jerusalem, Damascus and Cairo.

He is presently a Faculty Associate at the Center for the Study of Jewish-Christian-Muslim Relations, Merrimack College, USA.

Meri's notable publications include: (ed.) Routledge Handbook of Muslim-Jewish Relations(2016), Medieval Islamic Civilization: An Encyclopedia (New York: Routledge, 2004), The Cult of Saints among Muslims and Jews in Medieval Syria (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2002). Useful for drive-by research

Very useful for drive-by research. Some stuff is just hard to figure out from more scholarly work, like what books looked like and what coins were called and whether people were drinking tea yet (this book says no). I went through this book a page at a time and waited for words and dates to jump out at me. If I were actually looking for a particular entry or definition, I don't know that this encyclopedia is more useful than Google, but for unguided browsing, it's been very useful. I did, however, note some geographical errors in the "Cairo" entry that contrasted with other entries in the encyclopedia; it would have taken a very careful editor (which I am) to catch those errors, but I do find myself wondering what other errors I may miss in my reading.

Impressive and Timely

The Way Class Works is both an impressive and timely achievement. Weis has pulled together a diverse group of both established and emerging scholars, working from an astonishing array of perspectives, to foster an intricate and crucial dialogue about class. One of the most significant accomplishments of the collection is in the diversity of scholarly traditions represented by the contributors. While most of the contributors are sociologists or educational sociologists by affiliation and/or training, they work from multiple theoretical and methodological bases: ethnography, statistical and quantitative analysis, educational policy, Marxism, cultural geography, and youth subcultural theory, to name just a few. They are joined by scholars working in the fields of anthropology, psychology, economics, cultural studies, language and literacy, and many others, to produce a text which speaks to the richness and depth of the contemporary conversation around class in the academy. Thus, this is a very valuable text for teaching, as it allows for entrée into discussions about how class and related concerns are approached and analyzed within multiple scholarly traditions.

Weis's intellectual leadership--so evident in the shaping of this collection--demonstrates why she is a leading educational scholar in the field. Given Gamaron's (chapter 11) prediction that class and inequality will persist for all of our lifetimes, this collection is an important touchstone for both continuing and new conversations.
