About the Author
Michael H. Thaut. Ph.D., RMT is the coordinator of graduate studies in music and music therapy at Colorado State University. He earned his doctorate from Michigan State University in 1983, and has served as Director of Music Therapy at the Riverside Correctional Facility. He is the director of the interdisciplinary Center for Biomedical Research at Colorado state, and is an ccompished musician.

Neurologic Music Therapy at its finest

I should start by saying that I am student of music therapy especially fascinated by neuroscience.

Michael Thaut's book is essentially a detailed account of the philosophy, mathematical rationale, scientific evidence, and techniques behind Neurologic Music Therapy, a sub-field of music therapy that utilizes musical rhythm to treat various maladies. Thaut, of course, is essentially the father of Neurologic Music Therapy; this book provides the bases for his entire body of research. ANY MUSIC THERAPIST INTERESTED IN NEUROLOGIC MUSIC THERAPY SHOULD OWN IT AND READ IT!!

In terms of accessibility, to anyone interested in music therapy, neuroscience, or different ways to think about musical rhythm. To the layperson, portions will seem dense; however, any lover of music will get more insight into the power of musical rhythm. Some readers will certainly struggle through the middle chapters on motor optimization. But I encourage anyone who is genuinely interested to stick with it. Thaut's strength is not as a visionary poet per se but as an integrator of various academic fields. He understands how to weave music, math, neuroscience, and medicine together seamlessly.

Much of Neurologic Music Therapy focuses on rhythm-driven optimization of motor control. Perhaps a better title for the book, therefore, would have been "Musical Rhythm, Movement, and the Brain." For readers especially interested in prosody and other areas of music-related linguistics, I would suggest Ani Patel's "Music, Language, and the Brain" as a more appropriate collection of research.

This book was exciting resources for me. It answered my questions regarding recent experiences of sudden dream recalls after practice singing Baroque music, intensely. When we get older, we start noticing this and that, diminishing or lost. So good side of this state is that when it changes there is a chance of awakening! Great new discovery! The introduction to this work describes it as “multi-archival, cultural, and global.” Contributed by 191 scholars, the 424 entries are alphabetically arranged, two columns per page. Entries range from one column to several pages in length, and most include see also references to other entries as well as short further-reading lists. The index, repeated at the back of each volume, is impressive in scope and an ideal finding aid for someone interested in particular key topics that may be interspersed through the work. The content is impressive. The expected topics, which include key players, countries, organizations, conflicts, concepts, and treaties, are well documented and described. Entries are expanded beyond the usual cold war countries to include those that were either tangentially or directly affected by cold war activities. Most of the Middle East countries have entries, as do Asian and African nations, such as Ethiopia, Syria, and Zanzibar. The impact of the cold war on culture is of particular note, and entries such as Cinema, Literature, Music, Radio, and Television show how the tools of culture were used for propaganda as well as protest. All entries are meant to “illuminate the complex web of personal involvement, national ambition, ideological motivations, cultural manifestations, economic conditions, and geopolitical strategies that make up the Cold War.”  The Encyclopedia of the Cold War: A Political, Social, and Military History (ABC-CLIO, 2007), the first reference source to take advantage of newly declassified material, has many more entries along with 350 illustrations and 171 documents, which may make it more appealing to public library patrons and undergraduate students. (A smaller version, Cold War: A Student Encyclopedia, is designed for high-schoolers.) A much different exploration of the meaning of painting is found in Elkins's Pictures and Tears. Elkins (Sch. of the Art Inst. of Chicago; What Painting Is) asks why some people cry in front of paintings. Using both historical sources and solicited examples, he spins out various generally unconvincing hypotheses. Admitting that he himself has never cried in front of a painting, Elkins fails to get to the heart of the matter. Noting that other forms of expression (theater, music, novels, film) are more likely to elicit tears, Elkins attempts to explain their absence in our own time as a peculiarity of the 20th century. The examples of contemporary tears that Elkins resents are largely self-selected (solicited through ads in various publications) and neither prove nor disprove his theories. A rambling and often obtuse style makes this already rather intangible topic even more slippery. A compassionate validation of the individual spirit

Jame Elkins has written a book that should be in the librairies of schools, art historians, incipient and experienced art lovers. In a winning conversational style of writing Elkins makes the case for subjective response to paintings, both past and present. And in doing so he gives a brief course in at history (he is an art historian, actively teaching) that is less a chronological evaluation of politics and sociology and techniques of painting than it is a survey of how people have responded to paintings through time. His precis: we are in this century prevented from "experiencing" paintings, so immersed are we in swallowing the opinions of scholars and critics and our own spiritual aridity. He examines why certain people are able to cry in their encounter with paintings, others are moved to physiologic reactions, while others speedily walk past image after image in their need to huury past another obligatory check point in claiming cultural awareness. In many ways this is a sad treatise on the fact that we have arrived at a time when we don't embrace our vulnerability, don't admit that something so apparently inanimate as an old master painting - if given the quantity and quality of time to absorb it - can touch inner secret caves and cause us to light up our souls and our existence by responding with unfettered eyes and heart.
Elkins investigates the various responses (including his own) to the Rothko Chapel, to Giotto, to Renaissance paintings, to the Romantics, to Friedrich, and to Picasso's "Guernica". These are in the form of summation of letters written to him in response to his question "Have you ever cried at paintings?" sent to previous students, art historians, and friends. His findings show that art historians in general have encouraged us to examine paintings as examples of technique, of historical settings, of schools of thought in the past: such academic dissection has replaced the individual response to the visual image. And fortunately for us the author concludes that the visceral response to paintings is more important than the cell of academic cold shelter.
For those of us who have committed our lives to bridging the gap between the painter and the public, encouraging everyone to go to the museums, galleries, schools, and churches to experience the indefinable majesty of emotional response to art, this little book is a godsend. Buy it, read it slowly, break down your own barriers, open your mind, and you will find validation of your inner artist. This is a "beautiful presence" of an artistic expression and we are indebted to Elkins for his courage in writing it.

AFFECTING AND AFFECTIONATE BOOK

This book is beautifully illustrated with paintings by Caravaggio, Greuze, Bellini (Giovanni), Bouts, and Friedrich along with a picture of a chapel designed by Mark Rothko.
As the blurb states, it is a "strange and wonderful investigation into paintings and the emotions they conjure."
The book is eloquently written by the author James Elkins who is a professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has also authored "How To Use Your Eyes" and "What Painting Is".
This is a highly affecting book and will give hours of pleasure to those discerning readers who have the privilege to read the author's opus.
