Must Read for All Educators Who See What the Testing Obsession Is Doing to Public Ed

Taubman's book Teacher by Numbers is a must read by anyone who wants to examine closely the current obsession in American public education with testing and accountability. Taubman suggests that the underpinnings of this destructive force of trying to subject everything we do in education to measurement has its basis in many of social, cultural and even psychological underpinnings of modern education. With carefully constructed reasoning, Taubman declares that the "audit culture" that has its grip on public education is slowly destroying it.

Insightful and thought-provoking book

This is a profoundly insightful book. I read it for a graduate course. There is nothing else like it on the market; it is an important book because it offers a unique and riveting perspective on how the current standards and accountability model has come to be by placing a microscope on certain elements of the transformation that other authors have not offered, yet that needed to be illuminated.

Georgia DeGangi, PhD, OTR, FAOTA, is a clinical psychologist and an occupational therapist in private practice at ITS (Integrated Therapy Services) for Children and Families, Inc., in Kensington, MD. She is the author of Pediatric Disorders of Regulation in Affect and Behavior has over 25 years of experience working with infants, children, and their families.

Anne Kendall, PhD, MAT, is a school psychologist who also has taught in junior high school, high school, and at the university level. She is currently in private practice in The Wake Kendall Group, a group practice of psychologists and educational diagnosticians.

An absolute must read!!

This book is an absolute must read for anyone who interacts with children, either professionally or personally. Drs. DeGangi and Kendall do a beautiful job of explaining how and why children can be challenging as well as offering simple and straightforward solutions for parents and professionals. Their abilities to make incredibly frustrating and overwhelming scenarios with children (and we know what they are!) manageable and treatable is simply priceless. Their styles are highly informative, entertaining, witty and humorous. The language is perfectly accessible for professionals, family members and curious bystanders. I promise you will laugh and cry at the stories and find yourself somewhere in the book.

I particularly found two features of this book to be incredibly useful and unique: 1) the 2-page `How to Use This Book' helps the reader to navigate the material and to select relevant sections as needed and 2) the `Toolbox' (praise the toolbox!). The Toolbox is the most fabulous creation in this book and provides the reader with skills and ideas to use IMMEDIATELY. It's essentially the authors combined years of experience/training/expertise condensed into one invaluable chapter. Furthermore, each tool has its own motif which is scattered throughout the book alerting the reader along the way to its helpful tips.

As someone who works and plays with children, I wish I had this book years ago as part of my clinical training. I appreciate the straightforward explanations and easy to implement solutions. I have already started to utilize many of the ideas in the book with great success. Furthermore, it has provided me with a language and resource to share with parents I work with as well as family and friends who have children. This book is not just a great tool for difficult to treat children, but for all children. I can't recommend it enough!

Practical, Intelligent, Easy-to-Use Guide

All parents want a happy, confident child, but, contrary to what the Christmas letter may suggest, few are lucky enough to raise the perfect problem-free child. This book dispels the notion of perfect (You are not perfect. Your child is not perfect. Get over it.) Instead, the book helps parents understand why the child acts the ways he does and offers practical--and often fun--activities and exercises to deal with the hard-to-manage child.

Written with empathy and respect for both the parent and the child, the book is divided into chapters that address the intense irritable child, the oppositional child, and the clueless, disorganized child, with separate chapters devoted to children who suffer from sensory overload, anxiety, depression, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Case histories bolster the understanding of specific problems.

Helpful tips are broken out in boxes. Feeling guilty about using rewards to get your child to eat new foods or do his homework? It is very reassuring to read the tip: Bribery is the term used for something illegal or immoral.

What sets the book apart and makes it so useful to both parents and--I'm guessing here--therapists, is the Toolbox, a lengthy section of dozens and dozens of activities and exercises to address the problems of the hard-to-manage child.

Here you will find ways to help a child calm down, build self-esteem, manage out-of-control behavior, and improve interpersonal skills. The toolbox also contains suggestions to help parents provide structure and deal with the many battles around homework, mealtime and bedtime. The tools for developing responsibility and cooperation for chores are usefully broken into different age categories.

If you are perfect or your child is perfect, you will not need this book. As for me, it's on my reference shelf but may not stay there, for I've already lent it out twice.

More down-to-earth than other parenting books

What I really like about this book is that it is clear and straightforward and kind. The authors set out the many types of kids who are hard to parent, and then give you ideas for how to help you help your kid to be better adjusted to the world. The book is actually helping me to not feel so overwhelmed as a mom, even though one of the chapters is about helping kids who get overwhelmed!
It is a useful, practical book filled with ideas you can start putting into practice right away. I will recommend this book to friends and I reccommend it to you.

About the Author

Joseph Turow is Robert Lewis Shayon Professor of Communication at the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Communication. He has authored eight books, edited five books, and written more than 100 articles on mass media industries. Most recently, he is author of the third edition of his textbook Media Today: An Introduction to Mass Communication and co-editor of the companion volume Key Readings in Media Today: Mass Communication in Contexts, both published by Routledge.

Matthew P. McAllister is Associate Professor of Communications at Pennsylvania State University. He is author of The Commercialization of American Culture: New Advertising, Control and Democracy and co-editor of Comics and Ideology and Film and Comic Books.

This book literally has no point. It is a great read through the history of advertising but this is all done through an array of different people's articles and essays. Some are interesting but most are just a pain in the ass to actually read. They continually repeat what another article said.

This addition to the Routledge Encyclopedias of the Middle Ages series is intended to fill a gap by providing "a single reference work that presents Islamic civilization in a manner intelligible to the nonspecialist." Previously, the nonspecialist would have had to settle for general reference works or works focused on Europe, thus coming away with a fragmented view of Islamic civilization during the medieval period.

In more than 500 entries, coverage ranges from the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa to the Middle East and South and Southeast Asia, and from the sixth through the seventeenth centuries, a span of time that includes what is generally described as the golden age of Islam, 750-1200 C.E. The introduction tells us that historical themes have been deemphasized "in favor of an original synthesis that gives prominence to aspects of daily life." Accordingly, there are entries on topics such as Chess, Children and childhood, Desserts and confections, Gardens and gardening, Spices, and Sports. Other entries treat places, people, and topics in the arts, economics, law, politics, religion, and science. Reflecting another trend in medieval studies, a series of entries, including Women, patrons and Women, poets, deal with women's contributions. One-half of a page to four pages is the general range of entry length. In a few cases, further reading lists are joined by lists of primary sources (for example, in Nafs al-Zakiyya and Slaves and slave trade, western Islamic world).

A small number of black-and-white photographs accompany the text. Both volumes contain the index as well as alphabetical and topical lists of entries. The three maps that are provided can be found only in volume 1. Entries contain see also references, but since this is a work intended for nonspecialists, a few see references would have helped--for example, to direct readers looking for Hagia Sophia to Aya Sophia. Both are listed in the index, but with different page references (and in one case, an incorrect page reference) and no indication that they refer to the same building. The entry Avicenna in the index points the reader to several different pages but not to Ibn Sina --although readers looking up Averroes in the index will find page references for Ibn Rushd.

Though Medieval Islamic Civilization is probably not right for the secondary school audience suggested in the introduction, academic and large public libraries owning other titles in the series will certainly want to add it. About the Author
Michael H. Thaut. Ph.D., RMT is the coordinator of graduate studies in music and music therapy at Colorado State University. He earned his doctorate from Michigan State University in 1983, and has served as Director of Music Therapy at the Riverside Correctional Facility. He is the director of the interdisciplinary Center for Biomedical Research at Colorado state, and is an ccompished musician.

Neurologic Music Therapy at its finest

I should start by saying that I am student of music therapy especially fascinated by neuroscience.

Michael Thaut's book is essentially a detailed account of the philosophy, mathematical rationale, scientific evidence, and techniques behind Neurologic Music Therapy, a sub-field of music therapy that utilizes musical rhythm to treat various maladies. Thaut, of course, is essentially the father of Neurologic Music Therapy; this book provides the bases for his entire body of research. ANY MUSIC THERAPIST INTERESTED IN NEUROLOGIC MUSIC THERAPY SHOULD OWN IT AND READ IT!!

In terms of accessibility, to anyone interested in music therapy, neuroscience, or different ways to think about musical rhythm. To the layperson, portions will seem dense; however, any lover of music will get more insight into the power of musical rhythm. Some readers will certainly struggle through the middle chapters on motor optimization. But I encourage anyone who is genuinely interested to stick with it. Thaut's strength is not as a visionary poet per se but as an integrator of various academic fields. He understands how to weave music, math, neuroscience, and medicine together seamlessly.

Much of Neurologic Music Therapy focuses on rhythm-driven optimization of motor control. Perhaps a better title for the book, therefore, would have been "Musical Rhythm, Movement, and the Brain." For readers especially interested in prosody and other areas of music-related linguistics, I would suggest Ani Patel's "Music, Language, and the Brain" as a more appropriate collection of research.

This book was exciting resources for me. It answered my questions regarding recent experiences of sudden dream recalls after practice singing Baroque music, intensely. With access to Soviet Union and other archives, historians are now able to look at the era with new eyes and views that are not predicated on a U.S. foreign-policy focus. The introduction to this work describes it as “multi-archival, cultural, and global.” Contributed by 191 scholars, the 424 entries are alphabetically arranged, two columns per page. Entries range from one column to several pages in length, and most include see also references to other entries as well as short further-reading lists. The index, repeated at the back of each volume, is impressive in scope and an ideal finding aid for someone interested in particular key topics that may be interspersed through the work.
